So hard being a women in tech industry
I received an offer for a Director level business (non eng) role at a high growth company. The company has a great reputation and seems to be a good fit but the role is not really that exciting. It's my first move into tech and I have other offers for juicier roles at other companies but this could be better for long term prospects as a resume builder. Is there anyway to decline the offer with the intention of interviewing for other roles? Anyone have advice or experience with this? TC: 350k
Too little info to make any informed suggestions. “Business” roles is a very broad category. If you are moving into tech, do you really have a shot at companies besides this one? What type of company is this? What level of job? What’s your next best alternative?
Thanks. I have a few offers at tech companies but this is the most well regarded, though also the least meaty position...its an enterprise SaaS company. Roles are all similar titles, mostly strategy & bizops.
If I decline the offer is there a way to indicate my interest for another role that has since opened or would I be burning the bridge?
There is not.
There can always be some petty hiring manager, but in general, companies prefer matching new hire interests with their needs, especially when they are needing people in other positions you are interested in. I would politely let them know that you are very excited to work for the company, but want to grown in x-direction. See how they respond.
Moving from strategy consulting roles?
Yes
Also depending on many factors like size of the company. If it’s a big company, maybe; small one, I don’t think it’s a good move
About 2500 employees, so larger than the others but not FAANG huge. But I think it's a factor in why the role seems more constrained. Business is more mature and more employees so more siloed job scope.
Are there actual other roles at this company that seem juicier to you? And did they exist when you began the interview process? Hard for me to see how you can keep your credibility intact at this company AND also drastically switch lanes when you’re already this far into the hiring process. Do some introspection about what is more important to you—company reputation and resume building or juicy role—and take what you actually have or keep looking for something better at a different company. You can’t have your cake and eat it too.
Company is high growth? Role has opportunity to change! Separately, how did you manage to line up that many offers when changing careers? How long did you keep these offers open? Congratulations!
It's green where you water it. Join and make the role exciting.
