I’m having this simple idea for a mobile app. It’s a TC calculator. Inputs are base, RSU, vesting schedule, annual target bonus, sign on bonus. Output is TC for the next N years. Once the person gets a refresher, they can enter it, too.

The info is stored locally on the phone. User can create multiple profiles. For example, one profile for each offer they get. Or a profile for their friend to help them evaluate an offer.

The app automatically tracks stock growth and will provide up to date TC over time. Maybe also provide an option to see TC at grant time without stock appreciation.

There are other nice ideas that I can think of, but for now that’s the basic functionality.

Would you download such an app and use it?

      Haha. Exactly. All of this can easily be done in excel. Still shocking how many people mess it up.

      So you can look at this app as a predefined excel template with predefined formulas.

      Keep in mind this app will be targeting people who are comparing offers, or estimating next year’s TC.

      You can also hypothesize and see how your TC will be affected. E.g. if I get a $50k refresh in the next 2 years and the stock grows 15% each year, how much would I be making?

    One of the reasons I want to build this is the amount of people on blind who miscalculate their TC and have to be constantly reminded of how to do it right.

    Some more ideas:
    * Generate a screenshot of the offer in a nice and easy to read format. Kinda similar to
    * Provide templates for known companies. E.g template for amazon’s unusual vesting schedule.
    * When possible, tell the user where their TC falls in percentile. E.g. there’s already enough data for Google.

      I now realized that people are criticizing the idea as if it were a startup. I wish I made it clear that this is just a side project for me to learn how to make a mobile app.

    Like blind. Make people sign in with LinkedIn in. Then rank them. Ranking is key. People have egos. YOE. Career length. Rank. That’s why people ask TC + YOE right?
