TC vs quality of life metrics

I'm curious to see how folks are living relative to their TC. Feel free to add relevant things to this list but: - TC/YOE - sqft of apartment - beyond 401k, after tax spending vs saving rate - rough description of average annual vacationing - what kinda car do you drive - location - length of commute - family stage - happiness barometer I'll start - $310k, 5yoe - 800 sqft and likely downsizing - 26% saving (beyond 401k) - ~20 days traveling, various flights and hotels - $35,000 car that is now a year old - south bay, CA - 25 minutes door to door - married no children - happy but feel unsatisfied with apartment, local area, and rate of saving

-80k, 1 YOE -1200 Sqft Townhome -22% savings rate -3 day weekend for travelling every month or so. 2 vacations a year. -2014 model year car with 60k miles. -Metro Detroit Area -15 minute commute

More money will bring happiness only if you have life goal. Mine is to retire in 10 years. TC 450k, save 200k/year. Work 7-8h/day, pretty happy.

Just recently got this TC, so saving for retirement and plan to buy a house when the recession hits. Still fairly young, so retirement is still pretty far away, but trying to live beneath my means.

If I interpret quality of life with happiness, You are trying to use data to solve for happiness which in history of mankind could never be achieved. Why? It all depends what you prioritize. If you simply only care about money regardless of anything else then the higher your net worth is, the better. Many feel there quality of life is great with low TC, a small house with 2 kids. Some are jaded even with a trophy wife, kids they don’t need to really care for since they can hire supper nannies, etc. with a 7 digit yearly income. there’s no sweet spot.

I'm unsatisfied with a few of my metrics because I assumed higher correlation with TC. Namely: size of apartment, rate of saving, and the city I live in. Happiness overall is another question - and I accept your input on that matter.

Samsung chajimogo Sep 20, 2019

At least in my experience they are not correlated. One friend that I know has one kid, tc of 800k combined and live in a 1800 sq ft house. They have excellent quality of life. One that I know doesn’t have to worry about money but hates everything about almost anything. Not exactly a great quality of life because they just always seem tense and negative.

-350k, 5yoe after PhD, 2 yoe before - 800 sqft, 2/2 - 33 percent saving - 6-7 weeks traveling including vacation and wfh - SF - 40 minutes door to door - single, host parents from India for 4 months/ year, dog, Foster animals who need help. I'm extremely stressed financially. Pretty sure if I had a partner (even someone without a job) I'd be better off. Spend a lot because of loneliness and stress. Was most happy in early 20s in grad school without worries of money and relationships.

Pear Therapeutics prez.trump Sep 20, 2019

350k and ur stressed financially? That's some entitled shit

Well now that he has a good job, I'm sure alot of family members are relying on him and expecting him to take care of more stuff. It's an Asian thing.

- 120k/5 - 3200sqft house - lucky if I can hit 20% have daycare and shit - 3 weeks total, 1 week at beach, maybe an occasional domestic trip - hot hatch paid off - Maryland - 15 minutes - married and kids - neither very happy or unhappy. My life is fine outside of feeling like I'm underperforming work wise and see no clear path to a big TC in the next five years.

- $290K, 5yoe - room in crappy house with roommates - 90% savings rate - cheap vacations (no hotels) - no car - South Bay - 30 minutes - single - ok, but would liked to work less to have more time for life. Would also like housing prices to drop

Roku cultural Sep 20, 2019

90% of what? Post tax base pay, or post tax income?

Google bc89 Sep 20, 2019

Post tax income
