Hi,

I just had an interview with Apple as HWEngineering ICT4 or higher.

What do I have to expect based on my experience and current compensation to make sense of this possible relocation?

My status:
1. 15years after PhD

2. Making $250K at current job (last 4yr avg $300K due to stock up)

3. $250K options and RSU to give up if move

Better stay or move?

Thanks for all the help!

DO NOT MOVE. 250k in DFW is a fortune and you will need north of 1M, in my opinion, to be even close to worth it.

If you like the company and the role u r in, then absolutely do not move. If you are unhappy, then you should but should target TC of around 1M

EkMt77 is exaggerating. You should be targeting 500K to be equivalent

Housing cost is easily 3X atleast, in addition to no state tax vs 10.25%. You sure can survive well in 500k but big step down to your current situation

People look at ratios when the real amount is what you have left after bills. 400 may or may not be equivalent depending on what you need out of an apartment. It's definitely not a major improvement though.

DFW housing also runs larger and parking is readily available. You can easily buy. None of that is true in the bay area. A walkable life was great for me when I moved from Denton, but if you don't like it, you want 1k square feet and a crew cab, you're going to be miserable. Something to think about. You're at the top of your profession and maybe what you're looking for is something deeper than more money or room to grow.

Depends on what you are looking for, like others have said Bay Area is expensive and you are probably looking at $2m+ house in a good school neighbourhood which will be comparable to TX

Other than the cost, the place is nice with lots to do around and future opportunities in tech

You will feel a lot less rich in San Jose but the area is fantastic if you like nature and don't like to stay up late. Definitely a step up from Texas. I would do it for the experience, this place with all its problems is fucking excellent.

Won’t it depend on the offer Apple gives you? My only real concern for you is that it’s already difficult for someone to start a new life right out of college in the Bay Area, someone with an established life and savings and probably a house will find it feels like starting over. If you’re ok with that then go for it.

Do not move here. Everyone is trying to make their money and move out. You already have your money, stay out!

I will join you in several years.

If you want to earn more money, start investing in the dirt cheap real estate in Texas. Seriously, don't come to the Bay Area in California for less than what some above have mentioned. It would be a huge waste. Get another income stream. End of story.

Do you have spouse and kids? Omg you will need 500K-1M to equal lifestyle you currently enjoy in TX. If you already own property here then that’s a diff story. Starting off the house will cost 1.5-2M depending on school district. If you had bought 5-8 years ago the same house would’ve been 700K-1.2M. It all depends on housing I think.

I am a single and all kids already in college. I have a nice house here but Housing is not a factor to me. I can live in 1bed apt.

Depending on where your 1 bedroom apartment is it’ll cost you $2200-3500/mo I think. So you can factor that in and calculate backwards.
