hi all, I am currently working in data science field and going forward I want to stay in it. i have done masters from US with certifications and a paper in hand. however my current company wont sponsor for Green card filing. i landed a offer in Amazon for a capacity planning analyst role which doesnt involve much data science and might work on excel and internal tool. also amazon will file GC in EB3 category as opposed to EB2 (in which i qualify)...they have explicitly told that. I have thought a lot but I am not able to make a decision. could anyone help. except for Amazon tag and GC filing am not gaining anything. pay also also for Seattle area is less.
There are chances that your gc or h1b extensions might get denied for less complex and less pay job in future. I would suggest join amazon as it adds brand name to your resume and apply again internal to amazon or other companies.
Amazon is saying they will start GC process on first day of joining
And they have communicated in writing that it will EB3

Do they have any conditions for GC sponsorship? e.g. 6 months before beginning, need to have a certain perf. rating or need to get promoted there?
Nope. No conditions. They told since the job requires a person with bachelors and 3 years experience hence it will be EB3. Mine is masters from US with 6 years experience
Also I spoke to a person who works on same role but not in Seattle and I was told that the work is on excel most of the time
At Amazon, you will be underlevelled and won't meet the minimum requirements for an EB2. You will be competing with analysts straight out of undergrad. Most importantly, you will be doing work of much smaller scope and complexity because of your level, and yet your manager will make you think you suck at it because - guess what, you come from TCS. However, Amazon does add a lot of brand value to your resume, so you have a shot at getting into DS roles at other big tech companies. GC is a pipe dream for anyone born in India. If you intend to live in the US and want a shot at a better career in the longer term, choose Amazon.
Can I ask them to delay GC filing for sometime so that it gives me some amount of time to network and look for better roles?
Internal transfers are at the same level, so it's unlikely networking will land you in a higher-level role internally. For EB2, you'll need to be at L6 or higher (depends on team composition and role too though, you might get EB2 at L5 ). In short, consider this a career reboot and be prepared to slog really hard on relatively mundane stuff. It's going to be a sacrifice.
I imagine having your green card is a long term goal for you and important to your future trajectory. If so, maybe this is a worthwhile "setback". If you stay where you're at, where are you going to be in say 3, 5, or 10 years? If you're thinking that you might just wait until you get a data science role elsewhere, be aware it may or may not happen. These things are dependent on headcount, economy, interviews, luck..
