I recently got an offer in Canada and the company has processed my work permit. I'm in NJ now and moving to Toronto. Am I allowed to cross the border with a rental car for the 1st time with the approved work permit?

Is it one way? If so it will cost you a kidney. If a round trip then just check with rental company so will print out additional paperwork for you, other might have restrictions on how far from home can you drive it without additional fees. As for customs, they don’t care as long as you have all paperwork in order. Contract in the car, visa etc
I have a discount from my University so fortunately I'm saving a lot. Without that, it's crazy expensive!!
There is no restrictions driving a rental car. I drove throught that route on PR status.
No restrictions as long as you have the contract details with you. Be ready to answer where you will return the car and how if asked.
