Taking leave for rehab for myself, family and career. Could use some advice (esp from HR)

I’m going to check into a rehab facility for 30 days and wanted to see if I should tell my company on the record that the reason I’ll be out a month is for a substance abuse. Ive already taken a good amount of leave as my wife passed away last year and tried to straighten out in that time, but at this point I know I need to take this next step. I’m currently on disability for ptsd, depression, and anxiety (all legit). I want to be honest, but should I stick to those diagnoses for my leave extension? Long story short, does taking leave for substance abuse on the record affect my future at my current company or others I may work for in the future? Apologies for the long post.

Um, I think you just need a docs note that you need 30 days off for medical reasons. You dont have to say for what. Check your employer book, it should have it there.

No need to mention this to your employer. You have documents from your doctor and want leave and that is the end of the topic. Employer cannot question you. If your manager questions then stick to your story of PTSD, Depression and Anxiety. All the best and god bless!

I don't think OP has to tell a manager even that. It is none of their beeswax. All they have to worry about is a backup to keep things moving.

Great point! But some managers are....you know very well.

Check your employee handbook. Or HR about personal leave, nothing else.

God’s peace be with you. You are doing the right thing to take time to care for yourself in this difficult time. Hang in there.

Kudos for self awareness and for taking charge of your situation. Well done so far! Your employer doesn't have to know. As others mention, non-specific Dr note should be sufficient.

Anything you say can and will be used against you, so say as little as possible to your employer. Good luck, and I hope it goes well.

Don't say anything. Get FMLA if you qualify, your doctor's note should be general like recovery from exhaustion or some BS. Best of luck
