I'm 28, feeling kind of burnt out and really just want to quit my job and take 2 or 3 months of traveling and exploring interests I haven't had enough time for. How hard is it to get back into the market and find another job after a move like this? Is this a bad decision? I'm a SWE, btw.
Traveling almost 2 months in between jobs. Do it. Use the signing bonus to plan it all out. Best decision ever!
They gave you 2 months before starting? I thought most companies will only give you a few weeks, that's been my experience
Yep! They did, starting this friday till March 20th (almost 2months). It works out because the new company has their New Employee orientation planned on certain dates. The first 2 sessions would have been too soon, and the next ones were in March. So it worked out luckily. Also I had mentioned it beforehand that I will join in March because I have some personal commitments.
I would say go for it. Not only will you gain incredible experiences and memories, but it will give you time to recharge. Either take a leave of absence or find a new role that will give you some time in between.
I had been abroad during financial crisis in 2008 and quit my job! I came back with tough market, but still found nice job. Never regretted the time traveled
Recently took a 3 month leave of absense, it was exactly what I needed. I realized it's pointless to have a stockpile of money in the bank if you never have time to actually enjoy it. I carved out 5% of my savings and said, I'm going to live on this as I travel. In the long term it's really not going to really do any lasting damage to your finances. It was also very liberating realizing one doesn't have to be beholden to a paycheck every month. I traveled, volunteered, took classes, and just caught up with a lot of people in my life. Highly recommend.
Sounds amazing!
Awesome! So Yahoo just let you take 3 months off or you quit?
If you’re feeling burnt out but want to keep your job at Uber you should take a sabbatical. That way if you decide you want to come back to the company you know you’ll have a job.
I've only been at Uber for a year and a half. Don't think I qualify for sabbatical do I?
Do it! The experience will be worth it. As a SWE, you’ll have no problem getting a job when you come back
Thanks for the encouragement guys - a lot of people are saying do it between jobs but I've never heard of a company that will let you take like 2-3 months before starting with them. What are companies that are friendly to doing that?

Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?

I’m Sooo Happy about Biden signing TikTok ban bill today!!
Best is to do this between jobs
But it's tough to get more than a few weeks off in most cases. They usually want you start no more than 2-3 weeks after your old job and I want much more time than that.
I was able to hold my position at Amazon for 4 months without any problems
