I’m thinking of getting a large tattoo on my forearm in memory of someone. Anyone here have any negative experiences (career related) regarding tattoos? It seems safe to get in SF/tech but I want to make sure I dont close any doors of the more conservative areas/industries that might come up down the road (ie texas/tech) edit tc 260
Show us the tattoo
I would say bad career move even though they’re far less stigmatized than 10 years ago. 97% of people won’t care, 2% might rub them the wrong way, 1% might make them like you more. So a tiny percentage chance it might hurt you, but overall the vast majority won’t give a shit.
Good one Airbnb, now give referral :)
nobody cares just do good work and you're fine. I have tattoos and my co workers do too, and we are only judged on our work and interpersonal skills
Worth noting that Google is one of the more rational companies on the market though - this won't be true everywhere
Since it is just 10.mins i am not too late here. First of all i would say do not do not get one unless you realise it's full impact and the reason why you're getting one because you'll be explaining your reasoning to every single individual you'll meet after that even in just casual conversations. I have one and doing explaining everyday. When people on blind say they do not care they mean it but it has been proven with help of various surveys that when these same people when they are asked to consider you for a position of power the whole opinion and dynamics changes. The majority may still won't care but once they'll know that their life and career depends on your cult then they do care and probably will replace you with someone they consider normal just because of your changed physical appearance.
Thanks for the thoughtful response, I appreciate it. Do you think the dynamics are like that due to your industry? If consulting was ever a consideration, I’d never get a tattoo but I’m pretty certain I’ll always be in tech
+1. That’s definitely the worst part about getting a tattoo. For work it’s fine and never had an issue... but fuck you get to a point you want to smack anyone who just approaches you to tell you how they like your tattoos and then proceed to show you the small shitty tattoo they have on their lower back. You’ll learn to say “Oh it’s just art” or invent some kind of wacky reason and see if they buy it.
Don’t do it man. I got a full sleeve several years ago and honestly I regret it. Everyone always asks to see it and asks me questions about it (understandable and I don’t blame their curiosity). It’s just annoying though and brings a weird attention to me that I don’t like. Especially if it’s a memorial tattoo, don’t get it somewhere visible where everyone will always ask you about it. It’ll be a huge bummer for you and others because they’ll ask about it and you’ll have to talk about death. Trust me it gets old really, really fast.
I’m pretty extroverted so I don’t think the actual explaining would get old to me. Just a convo starter if anything. Thanks for the input about talking about death over and over again though. I might need to move the memorial piece somewhere else because I dont want to be sad every time it’s mentioned
I have many, many tattoos. Never an issue. I repeat, never an issue.
Try getting a smaller one in a less visible area first and see how you like it
Wear long sleeves and it won’t matter
That’s the plan for first impressions or situations where I need to. But for day to day work, I don’t want to stay covered up every single day
