Techies in Raleigh-Durham?

More and more companies seem to moving into the area. Which one do you work for and how do you like it?

LN and I love it! We are on NC State campus, so we have access to the university, which is nice. It's also the new North American tech hub.

Is it the same state where LGBT have the same rights? Treated like animals?

IBM SHEX56 OP Aug 15, 2017

It's the same state that had that bathroom law but it's now overturned. The triangle area is pretty progressive and young, so no I wouldn't say LGBT are treated like animals here.

Overturned is a bit of a stretch. More renamed than anything else. NC used to be a beacon of the progressive south but had lost its way the past few years (having a republican controlled everything will do that). Getting rid of McCrory was at least a step in the right direction. That said, the Triangle is very liberal in comparison to the rest of the state. Lots of younger well educated people + a massive amount of transplants (often coming from “blue” states).

Plus we have nice homes you can actually afford!

People tend to migrate from areas that suck into areas that don't suck yet. But they bring their voting habits with them, with little self-awareness--few stop to ask if they actually helped create the situation they chose to migrate away from and change their own ways accordingly. If RTP is nice, I hope it survives the attractiveness it will engender intact.

Very true on bringing voting habits. If you left an area because it sucked to move to the opposite, perhaps vote in reverse :)

People who come to Raleigh generally find it charming and hard to leave. The tech scene has been growing well for a while, it just never had the explosive boom to make it really shiny.

Airbnb fOem61x Aug 15, 2017

I found it very easy to leave. It's a great city if you're over 30 and want to start a family. Not too great if you're young.

Google 8sivalmt Aug 16, 2017

Agree on the family part. For young ones, it depends if you have friends or not.

Will start as a Software Engineer with Ebsco Informat Services from Sep. Really excited!

Red Hat, and I fucking love it here (both the company and the city). Still kind of a trip to drive into downtown Raleigh and see our logo on the skyline.

LexisNexis science! Sep 28, 2017

So I heard the hours were long and the pay was meh at RH.

Red Hat graybeard Oct 1, 2017

I can only speak for my corner of engineering, but the times where I work longer hours than I did at IBM or HP it's because I actually give a shit about the company and the work. And Red Hat has been a million times more flexible about how and when I work (and what I work on) because they actually give a shit about their employees. It's kinda nice. As for the pay... I have nothing to complain about. And it sure goes further in Raleigh than it did in Boston.

I have been in the area for more than 15 years and love living here. I worked for most of the tech giants. My only advice is, stay away from HPE.
