Technology - 5G and Artificial Intelligence - China vs USA

I saw a video online where it shows China will deploy 5G in 2020. Huawei is at the forefront of it. Additionally, AI is another domain where China is gaining a lot of ground. Huawei alone spends $15B in Chinese Labor per year for RnD while Apple spends $14B in US labor. Most US tech companies focuses on consumer products and web. Where did the US made a miscalculation? Will China win the AI and 5G Battle with the USA? Post your comments below

5G for sure.

China will win tech war, but US will win marketing war. As we say, "perception is reality."

That is also true. But marketing can only take you too far. Right?

Databricks Rixmwl Aug 13, 2019

"marketing can only take you too far" was likely meant to be "...so far" but that Freudian slip is more accurate...

It will be tug of war, but competing with the US equally in this space is already a big win for China

Blue Cross Blue Shield tarsier OP Aug 13, 2019

What do you think is the biggest US blunder?

Google emc2too Aug 13, 2019

There is no blunder. Everything is going according to plan except Trump. The plan is to raise the world to the US standard of living.

Right now 5G is undefined, or rather 5G is what you define

Haha, Cisco no wonder US is behind. 5G standard is a actually very well defined at this point

Iā€™m American but have close friends from China and have some inside knowledge to some crazy stuff. China is a solid 3-5 years ahead of US in AI and 5G.

Airbnb hShz63 Aug 13, 2019

China is ahead of US in AI application, but not in AI research

F5 Networks dontalk2me Aug 13, 2019

China is ahead in the game I think. Having less regulation BS provide much more freedom in training datasets

Watch this video though https://youtu.be/iojQ153cai8

The practical AI application in China is fucking horrifying. Like, total surveillance with real-time face recognition, the social score and predictions of unreliable citizens, a lot dystopian stuff there. TBH, I'm glad that US is not quite there yet.

5G is a joke, not sure what users will get out of it if anything. LTE is fast enough for most everything

Marqeta jollyOlive Aug 14, 2019

I donā€™t think so, we think LTE is fast enough because we havenā€™t thought of 90+% of the use cases for 5G yet. They probably wonā€™t come to fruition until theyā€™re able to be applied to our everyday lives. Lots of thing will probably be dependent on the speeds provided by 5G within a decade of it coming out.

Databricks Rixmwl Aug 14, 2019

No. Think autonomous cars or other objects where the hardware is cost prohibitive on the device, but instead is on the cloud. 1gbps connection could make that feasible. 64MB used to "be all we need"

Quora WalU80 Aug 14, 2019

Yes. In future, we will set a queue for Americans who apply for a gc in China. How long should they wait? I think 5 years is good.

Iā€™m not sure about 5G, but for AI , especially on CV, ML , I think China has already have great advantage, thanks to poor human right condition. Some AI unicorns has a perfect playground and nearly unlimited capital invest from government
