I saw a video online where it shows China will deploy 5G in 2020. Huawei is at the forefront of it.

Additionally, AI is another domain where China is gaining a lot of ground.

Huawei alone spends $15B in Chinese Labor per year for RnD while Apple spends $14B in US labor.

Most US tech companies focuses on consumer products and web.

Where did the US made a miscalculation?

Will China win the AI and 5G Battle with the USA?

China will win tech war, but US will win marketing war.

As we say, "perception is reality."

Apple's marketing taking it "too far" had a wildly powerful effect on its profit, market penetration, stock price, etc

AT&T 5G is a good counter point. Stupid marketing can backfire, but I still wouldn't say they're scrounging for pennies or that they didn't convince many people of this lie. Boeing's MCAS/Max/737-8200 problem will be a case study we can watch pan out right before our eyes over the next year.

5G is a joke, not sure what users will get out of it if anything. LTE is fast enough for most everything

No, use your head. For mission critical there’s no way youre going to offload compute via network. Imagine there is a hiccup in connectivity and the car just drives into a wall.

Naturally there are tradeoffs. If you seriously believe what we have (LTE/50mbps) is enough for all use cases... 🤦‍♀️

I didnt say it is enough for everything, just “most everything”, as in, 5g is not gonna unlock much more unless im missing some killer app

It will be tug of war, but competing with the US equally in this space is already a big win for China

What do you think is the biggest US blunder?

There is no blunder. Everything is going according to plan except Trump. The plan is to raise the world to the US standard of living.

China WLB is wrecked though. They are developing technology out of pressure not necessary out of will. American innovation is more organic unlike its food. Also, if manufacturing ever moves out from China to say either India or Vietnam or even Mexico, will yield less IP infringement and in turn less Chinese innovation.

The US not auctioning off H1Bs to high earning people from China and India created this rival. They could've ensured that top talent left China continuously for the US but instead decided to limit it and even made it a lottery based system so there was no guarantee the US was actually getting the best.

It's too late now since Shenzen and Shanghai salaries have already caught up to the US. They still have a chance to not mess up the brain drain with India.

I’m American but have close friends from China and have some inside knowledge to some crazy stuff. China is a solid 3-5 years ahead of US in AI and 5G.

China is ahead in the game I think. Having less regulation BS provide much more freedom in training datasets

Right now 5G is undefined, or rather 5G is what you define

Haha, Cisco no wonder US is behind. 5G standard is a actually very well defined at this point

F5, can you point out to an ITU document which specifies this? AFIK, the phase 1 was released couple of months ago which is using 4G hardware, the phase which is the real deal will be out by mid 2020.

Yes. In future, we will set a queue for Americans who apply for a gc in China. How long should they wait? I think 5 years is good.

The practical AI application in China is fucking horrifying. Like, total surveillance with real-time face recognition, the social score and predictions of unreliable citizens, a lot dystopian stuff there.

TBH, I'm glad that US is not quite there yet.
