Tempting to decline Netflix offer

I like the product, culture and team. The chance of being fired may not be great but I’m on H1B with no backup plan. It really sucks to say no to Netflix and I don’t know when I’ll have another chance to work there. I’m tempting to turn it down for mental peace.

Life is so hard!

Don’t sweat it. I recently started and all the firings I’ve seen are not surprises to the employee. They always try to work with you for 6-12 months. Unless you do something stupid that any company will fire you on the spot.

    • So you recently started and already saw several firings? That’s unusual from any other company. Can you detail a bit more your experience with regards to this firing and performance?

It depends. Some managers are good and work with the struggling employee for a few months (usually 2-3) but unfortunately there are bad managers who are trigger happy.

I worked for Netflix for 8.5 years. People talk about firings a lot, but the numbers on the ground don't back up the impression of a fire-hungry culture.

Ask your hiring manager how they approach this issue and what their track record at Netflix is.

Ditto. There is no fire-hungry culture.

Not true. I've been here 8 years and have seen way more firings here than at my previous FANG company. Unless you work with the person that was fired, you don't know most firings that happen.

Not true and data proves it too. At Netflix number of people leaving voluntarily is around 35% and involuntarily is 65%

They've sort of screwed themselves with their reported fire hungry attitude. If you have strong game/fu, and can get past your co-workers, who think you getting fired will help them (strange thinking), then you will be fine.

No IC thinks that because we don’t have a scarcity of bonus or raise for ICs — if you hit a ceiling you can transfer internally to something harder. Management on the other hand.. let’s just say don’t come here if you are in a rush to make Director.

I'd suggest against joining if you are on H1b and single breadwinner. But if you have a spouse that works as well and can move you to H4 if you get fired, then you should be fine. If you already make 430k, I wouldn't risk it unless you have a pretty high jump in TC.

430 is the offer, ~25% more than my current TC. I have approved i140, still need a few more years to get GC. I can boomerang within 1st year, then no backup plan after that, thinking of interviewing twice a year to reduce the risk. How does this sound?

I don't know what else is going on in your life but if you think you can handle a high performing job + interviews twice a year at tier1 companies + any family/hobby commitments you have, your plan sounds reasonable.

Got it, yeah once per year is probably more realistic

I’m on H1B and I have zero concerns over getting fired. I think layoffs seem more frequent at Netflix because they are transparent about them and communicate it widely.

Netflix does layoff? Interesting. Thought it wouldn’t happen at growth companies.

They don't layoff people, they fire them. And interesting that you say you are not worried about being fired while on H1B, that seems to be the biggest concern of people I know in Netflix on H1B

I am on H1B and there is this constant fear of getting fired. It gets you. How many ever people may say that's against Netflix culture, I get it but reality is getting fired for few is equivalent to leaving the country. It stresses you. I do have option of moving to h4 yet it scares me. It all depends on your appetite for risk.

Can confirm the rep, one of my buddies worked at Netflix for about 8 months. Similar TC.

He was fired unceremoniously after an HR complaint related to something he said while he was drunk at a company party was heard by the wrong person. His manager said he failed the "keeper test".
