Which one would you choose? You already know advantages/disadvantages of tech jobs. Here’s what a professorship gets you. Benefits of tenured professorship: you never get fired (completely recession proof), you are your own boss, sabbatical in exotic locations, live in a university town, free university for kids, be at forefront of research Disadvantages of tenured professorship: changing job within academia is hard, lower TC than tech, need to write grants to fund students.
I’m surprised so many people are voting for the professorship. Academia is tough and more exhausting than a tech job. With tech you can work a shorter period of your life and save to retire early. With academia you have to work all the way to the end and put up with politics and committees more so than in private industry.
That 130k in CO is worth close to 300k in the Bay Area. Combine that with the job security and free college for kids and it’s almost on par. And if you actually want to teach and research and publish then professorship is probably the way to go.
What is the pension? My wife is a doctor (medical professor) at a public university anf practices. She gets 22% salary match from a university hospital.
Not sure of numbers but I heard it is extremely good.
Care to elaborate on the details? Most of us have no idea what it means

It’s very hard to have sabbatical at the exotic location on $135k ;) but at $350k its much easier ;)
How is it hard? The university where the sabbatical is conducted pays. Also sabbaticals run for 6 months to a year. Not sure any company would let someone do that.
For $500k TC is was able to have weekend anywhere in the world 2-3 times a month, plus like week long getaways every 2-3 months. I know that sabbatical is paid, but seriously, good vacation at the exotic destinations cost you cash. Hard cash. And your $1 earned in Colorado doesn’t buy you more on Bora Bora or Male than $1 earned in California.
This isn't fully accurate. As a professor, you'll be in demand for consulting work. Prices start at $400/hr and can reach over a thousand an hour.
Also, if you're in CS or CE, you can work part time at a top tech firm and get L6 to L8 levels of pay.
I've seen some academics/professors get level 7 jobs in Google/FB. I guess they can choose to retire that way much sooner than in a professorship. College tuition for kids is a one time need that they can easily afford.
Doesn’t happen in many non-cs fields.
Do faculties get to send their kids to college for free? I’d never heard that before. Is it only in Colorado or everywhere?
Many universities waive tuition for professors’ kids or at least have huge concessions.
Everywhere that I know off
