Google recently changed it to L4 which is 2 years out of undergrad. Imagine peaking your career 2 years out of college... How much opportunity for growth does your company allow?
What? Google allows you up to SVP and even CEO, it's you who decided to stop at 4, not Google.
Ehh kinda.. they also made l4 terminal so they donāt have to promote higher either and have a ton of pet projects going on that arenāt useful
Cisco gets it. The pressure to promote put a lot of folks at L5 that don't belong. How many L5s at Google would get through L5 promo committee again if they were evaluated on their last year of performance? (Just forget promo quotas and stack ranking for this exercise) Edit: now I'm wondering if gooooooogle is secretly Sundar and if not why he or she decided to not become CEO when it was offered to them
What's the definition of "Terminal Level" ?
At least at Dropbox it means the level you can stay at indefinitely without it being a performance issue. At lower levels if you donāt eventually get promoted youāll be asked to leave / put on a performance plan.
IC4 at Dropbox, which is the level below staff engineer. New grads start at IC1.
IC4 at Oracle. College grad joins as IC2. Generally takes 7 years, but there are exceptions.
L6 at Amazon. Many L7s are jokes and VPs are realizing it.
Can an average Google's college grad become L4 in two years?
Sure. The ladder difference between L3 and L4 is basically just independence. When all it takes to manage you is assigning work 4 times per year and talking about feelings or bowel movements once per week then you're an L4. Most people get there in the first year and then Google has you do the dance for another year before they acknowledge it.
L8 at Amazon for ICs.
Bullshit. L6 is terminal, and even L5 in many orgs. NOBODY expects people to become SrPE or gtfo.
Oh they do, outside of Amazon. If you're an L5 for 5+ years and then decide to interview with Google or Facebook, they'll say your non-promotion to L6 shows limited potential, and of course they'll rather hire someone who became L6 in 2 to 3 years.
L5 @ FB
Thats when you say fuck google
