Many software engineering teams at Tesla are failing because of very low hiring bar. (Engineers working for car teams are exceptionally good and do not fall into this category). Over 60% of team members are contractors converted to FTE. Here is their job-life cycle. Interview while joining as contractor: Skype interview. The candidate only does lip sync to someone else answering questions behind camera. Fake experience. Non engineering degree. No name school/online degree. Reason for hiring a contractor: Some say HM gets a cut. After joining as contractor, the measure to tell if they are good : - no. of hours the person is online/in office. Contractor to FTE interview: Done for the sake of God. Done by a friend of HM. No real interview question asked. TC offered: 80-100k for 12+ YOE. Title: Sr. Sr. Sr. Engineer (Every promotion adds a Sr. to the title with 5% increase in pay.) Key accomplishments (with 15+ YOE): added a new brute force method to a common code base. Or reinvent wheel. Confidence level: Sky high. Knowledge level: Toilet. Code quality: Shit. Best practices: Defined by people with most no of Sr. in their title. Interview bar raisers : Person with at least two Sr. in title. Asks shit in interviews. Recommends another shitty person to be hired. Interview questions asked: Reverse a string level. What is inheritance. Talk about interviewer's favorite library. When there are layoff talks: look busy. Increase code commits count. Talk loud, as if they are guiding a junior engineer. 😄 Every damn software team (again, not car teams) is loaded with such people. I'm among the most senior persons in the company. Have tried pointing this to HMs but nothing has changed. 5% of the total are really good engineers (direct FTE engineers from good US companies) trying to solve real problems but most of their time goes in cleaning up shit. No real motivation because of shit clean up work. Good ones are preping to jump off the ship. Does it happen everywhere?
