That FAANG interview where...

... you solve all coding questions perfectly and get rejected because you questioned the system design guy’s stupid idea that he got from a preposterously generic Tushar Roi video.

The dude was quite confused by things I quoted from the DDIA book.

Also, what’s up with L3s interviewing me for an L5 position?

Should we then lower the bar then? Hasn't that happened already with making leetcode as, effectively, the sole requirement? Are you suggesting that leetcode is for shafting privileged people who got education and experience? How do you know that everyone who got education and experience is privileged?

So you say that knowledge is meant only for people who go to college? You are assuming that system design is only for interviews, that's where you are wrong

Did I say that knowledge is a privilege? Btw, leetcode is not knowledge. Knowledge and experience comes from being in the trenches on the job. Education isn't a privilege. It comes from working hard all your life to acquire it. Not from quick videos and cheat-sheets alone.

If you did not have the knowledge or education required for a job, you aren't ready to perform that job. Are you?

I thought we were talking about system design not leetcode.

You yourself twisted the topic lol

"Leetcode and videos are cheat-sheets" - my words, but I guess that's the end of the relevant discussion. Good luck then!

Sometimes it’s better to be emotionally intelligent than leetcode smart

We don't even know if OP is LC smart. He thinks he is, but Google begs to differ 🤷‍♂️

I bet some interviewers choose the candidates with similarly low emotional intelligence. You are assuming interviewers are good interviewers. There are good ones and bad ones.

Maybe they just didn’t like you. Doesn’t have to be a technical reason.

What’s your race and what was the race of the people interviewing you? Often times it’s race related but you’ll never know.

Also at times during interviews it’s more about the personal chemistry than the actual interview. Always try to win their hearts first, then the mind can easily follow.

L3 interviewing L5 is wrong in many ways. They will judge based on different criteria and are less likely understanding different approaches. Young folks tend to have strong ego and want to look like they know better. Young inexperienced interviewers are pickier as well (about unimportant stuff). This is a fault of the company. I don’t understand why this industry makes newbies interview senior candidates. Most of my senior friends usually mess up the interview by an inexperienced engineer because they look at different things. They also make the candidates confused as they don’t have good communication skills to explain.

Had you solved all the coding questions perfectly, the system design interview wouldn't have been enough to trigger a rejection.

Solved them perfectly and went through test cases to show that they work. It’s not even a question. They all used well known algos and felt super easy to me.

Quoting YouTube videos seemed like the best course of action to you? Or maybe it was trying to convince the interview he was wrong.

Amazon will only let people who are >= your target level interview you. Oops. Wait. The AA in FAANG does not include Amazon. Sorry

And if you had got an offer, it would, at best, not be a down-leveled position...

    Good save!
