A quick search online offered suggestions for why the San Diego tech scene (outside of bio) pales in comparison to Bay Area, Seattle, NYC. - Not enough venture capital - Talent attraction/retention - Cost of living - etc. The shallower pool of VC makes sense. If the opportunities were equal in Seattle/SF and SD, which would you choose?
San Diego. It’s an amazing town with great weather, beaches and people.
SD will forever be in the shadow of LA, which is way larger and more established as a major city. Best case is a trickle effect of the LA tech scene pushing a few startups to SD once LA gets saturated.
SD is awesome. Not sure why it’s not more popular.
SD is way better than LA from my many travels to both places...
Too much sun, look at anyone in S. CA over 40 who grew up there: their skin looks like worn out leather due to the sun damage.
For whatever reason SD just isn't nerdy enough yet. And tech is controlled by nerds. Once tech becomes more than just a nerd's game and a Normal Business Job, every city will be a tech hub. Just like every city is a "business hub".
Tech became a bro thing ten years ago when it became the highest paid job you can get straight out of undergrad.
San Diego is where you go when you make it, best city on the west coast. Don't ruin it with tech people. Rich surfers only please.
Doug DeMuro is moving there tho. Must be a cool place
Thanks everyone for the $0.02. I would pick San Diego hands down. Weather is important to me. However, so is population density. I like that Seattle and SF have large, densely populated urban centers.
Born and raised from San Diego and family has extensive business ties. It's not really a tech community. It's mostly a military town with defense contractors and a significant biotech/pharma industry. Not really a significant financial sector. I'd say the biz community is old school too. Everyone that's successful in San Diego has "made it". It's the cool reason why people are much chiller and have diverse backgrounds, but it means it's an older and more low key crowd. Would love to make it myself and put some capital to work in SD
