In a followup to my last post, "bad and ugly of being a PM", wanted to find out what Product Managers love (if anything) about their job
Best parts: Constant interaction with people to work through problems and difficult design decisions, supporting my devs/doing what I can to make their life easier because they do some kick butt work. It’s a great role for having strong people and negotiation skills if you enjoy technical design but don’t necessarily want to be a developer.
Lots of control over the product and seeing it out there in the world. Getting to interact with people in a variety of roles.
The power of deciding what gets built, ability to influence direction and the overall product be it features, quality, experience or customers. I think it gets better if you can rise up to senior principal levels as an ic. It's all about influence and more experience provides you the credibility and experience to do that. In large matrix Ed organizations with politics and other shit, also do not underestimate the power of effective communication and relationships, that removes barriers to make things happen. Good pms can do that.
Building relationships and helping "translate" the importance of everyone's work. It's really meaningful and feels good to help people recognize each other's contributions. This leads to greater influence and reputation, and you get to write code sometimes if thats something you enjoy.
Impact.
Influence and impact
In my company PM travel all the time and the guys enjoy that bc they don’t have to take care of kids at home...
What company is this?
I don’t like to be away from my kids that much. It’s hard on the other parent too.
