Thinking about either switching companies or moving teams

Currently an SDE I @ Amazon and about to hit a year. Manager keeps telling me I will get a project to work on in regards to my promo to SDE II, but it’s been 4 months now. Would it make more sense to move teams or companies entirely?

Maybe makes sense to talk to manager and tell that you’ve been waiting a while?

I’ve done so twice now. Not one to be passive aggressive on this subject matter or any matter for that.

Try to fill out the promo tracker on some side areas and get going.

You gotta grab those projects by the 🐈

What if multiple people are trying to grab, and you only get a leg 😛

Have heard managers say that for years. It's an Amazon thing to string people along. Better to ask for the loop or just move to a different company.

Your manager probably just doesn't feel you're ready. It doesn't have to take that long to own and deliver a project for the promo from sde1 to 2. Just work on earning trust with your manager and your teammates in the meantime. If you're not aware of the projects you're team has coming up on the horizon, you may not be as ready as you feel you are.. or your team just isn't doing shit, at which point, you should maybe just switch teams

Get involved with the projects with other senior engineers on the team. That will give you good mentoring and feedback for promotion.

I have been here for 2 year 3 months on 2 teams. I spent 1.5 year on a project that was screwed up by a senior guy then I switched team. On my 2nd team, my promo project got deprioritized in March. I am leaving Amazon soon. Lessons learnt: - never trust your manager’s promises - stay away from shitty engineers - stay away if you feel there are politics - if you do not feel you are on the right path, find a new place ASAP

In Uber, we blame it on hyoergrowth and write new RFC for redesign.
