People who work at a hedge fund in London/NY, how easy is it for a Dev to make 1m plus every year in TC and how stressful is the job? I have good knowledge of financial markets (if it matters)
Why would an organization pay you $1million plus? Just think, if you own that hedge fund, would you? Unless somebody makes $25m for your business, you are not going to pay $1m to that person. Everyone has good knowledge of financial markets, doesnโt help that much.
Hedge funds pay well but $1M is not going to happen for a SWE or infrastructure engineer. Only the quant guys might make that kind of money, but that is mostly commission.
What are the chances of a SWE becoming a quant?
SWE to quant? Lol. Close to 0% unless you have a phd. But firms like citadel has many ppl transitioning from swe to quant (check linkedin). Though i heard from my citadel friend that quant role for swes are usually not alpha research (the sexy one that actually researches money making signals), but rather something back office-ish like risk quant or portfolio mgmt quant etc that actually still does dev-like work (there are many diff kinds of โquantโ). But even those types still make a lot of $$$ though. I heard around 400-500k with 5 yoe
I think the days are gone when hedge funds were paying more than regular tech companies, for swe.
We generally don't pay 1 million to IC devs. A good rule of thumb is to expect roughly the same pay as Google/Facebook. The highest rungs of IC might make that much, but I'm not even sure if anyone has reached those.
Let's go with me :)
