Thoughts on crop tops at work

Although many tech companies say they have no dress code it almost seems like there still is one with the basis of how others will perceive you, especially as a woman.

That being said- what are the general thoughts on tops that show a bit of the stomach area to work? I feel most comfortable in these but am worried about how my colleagues will perceive me. Facebook has a huge “come as you are” emphasis so it seems okay to me but just wanted some thoughts.

  • I would not. No one will say anything but your professional career will be negatively impacted. If you want to get that promotion, dress like you earned it.

I really want women to be respected at work, so please don’t wear a crop top. Earn the respect you deserve for your work. If you don’t dress like you earn your peers’ respect, you won’t get it.

the way you should dress at work is “Would I be ok if the CEO or an external media team saw me in this outfit?”. If no, then don’t. If you can somehow make it professional, i.e. you could give a meeting to external people visiting your office in it, then sure.

Is this a valley thing that you even have to ask? In NYC, people won't even notice. Unless you are high level exec, it doesn't really matter.

Curious why you feel more comfortable in these rather than, say, a t shirt, which is made of the same material.

I don't care. A lot of people don't (& not just because they want to peep). But some people definitely will. So it depends on whether you care about their disapproval.
