Why does Google only give 15 days of time-off for new employees? No matter how experienced you are, you always start with 15 days! I find it quite limited compared to other companies. Specifically, when many companies give unlimited PTO! Any possibility of google changing this policy?
uh when has any company given more PTO because someone has more work experience?
I mean it could be based on title. Staff engineer gets more vacay
and mgmt gets even more?
Unlimited PTO is marketing trick to pull in candidates while wiping out PTO payouts at the end of employment. In the most ideal of places, under great managers it may work but thats not the norm. It feels more like they're doing you a favor that you'll be expected to reciprocate and there are plenty of data showing generally less time off is taken across the board. I'd take our old 15 days a year over the new unlimited PTO anytime after living with it for a year.
My company had unlimited PTO once upon a time and I agree, it is misleading. You still have to get supervisor approval and if they need you working, they say no. They also don't want to commit in advance in case a crunch time comes up when you are scheduled to go. Very difficult to take the time, whereby if you have an allocation that you have to use by the end of the year, you then have more pressure to get the supervisor to let you take it... "so when IS a good time?...". This is especially true if company will not allow vacation rollover or limit it. I also don't like the limited vac time at Google and Amazon. I think it should be negotiable or have a vacation buy. At a previous company we were allowed to buy or sell a week of vacation per year (done at benefits election time). Nice flexibility.

Amazon only gives 10 days PTO (80 hours) when you start. And get this: only 6 paid holidays (July 4th, Christmas, etc.). Only 6! Most companies have 10-12.
There's an edit button for times like this.
Untrue. Amazon gives 15 days in the Bay area at least.
