Recently accepted a position at a firm and they initiated a background check. I realized that the title I put in my resume(data scientist) doesn't match with what I have in my relieving letter(Applications Engineer). It was a college hire and everyone who got recruited along with me had this same generic title but ended up being a data scientist and research scientist. Everything else apart from the title is about data science. All my projects were machine learning and stats based. Will this be a problem. The position was back in India and the current offer is in the US. The background check is being done by Sterling.
I don’t expect it to be an issue. You passed the interview for the new role. You may get a call to clarify but if it’s a problem, just message here.
Well you lied to their faces, why would that matter?
Just tell them what you said here..."It was a college hire and everyone who got recruited along with me had this same generic title but ended up being a data scientist and research scientist...."
I just had a similar situation, you're fine. Title inflation/deflation or inaccuracy over time is very common, what matters most are the responsibilities you had and establishing with the new org that you did not misrepresent yourself. Just repeat what you've said here to new HR.
Hey so did you face an issue in the check and got it resolved or did you never faced any issue?
The check showed a discrepancy and I had to have new HR group get in contact with old HR group before the bg check could be signed off by new HR.
What is the status of your background check ? Is it done ? How much time did they take
Yeah its done. It took 7 days. Had no issues.
In the background check application did you put the real title or the one you had on your resume?
