In my previous company I worked on Information Retrievel, Search and Big Data Engineering. However, I realized my coding skills weren’t improving a lot. I joined Amazon and now work in a Platform team. I see my coding skills improving a lot here, I enjoy it however I don’t feel as passionate about my work as I did before. Probably working with Data gave me a direction and I could see my work having some customer impact. In the back of my mind, I feel like continuing in the current role for a year or two to develop my general engineering skills, take data science courses and go back to working with Data. I need some advice on what career path I should choose or what things I must consider in deciding one. Was it a mistake in leaving the previous domain I worked in?
That's a great idea, go on.. the demand is pretty high in that area within or outside of amazon
I once read that it is better to gain a broad general knowledge across many subjects than to specialize in just one. But my focus is more on entrepreneurship as opposed to working for someone else. That advice may be different if you are aiming to work for google or Facebook.
All the professions you listed can work across many types of industry and are highly paid. You get the luxury of concentrating on happiness. If it's money that worries you, do 2-3 years in finance/hft to build up retirement.

Anything you learn from is never a mistake. I think your idea of becoming specialized in your area and then moving on is a great idea.
