Too many streaming services

I’m so annoyed that everyone wants to do a streaming service. I understand why but it makes users mad. For an example, I won’t get NBCUniversal. It’s just dumb. I only have HBO Go during game of thrones. I guarantee you this will increase pirating. Disney+ is genius. Netflix has a good backing. Hulu is good too (owned by Disney now). CBS is starting one and I hear a bunch of networks want to do their own too. When will they realize that consumers will be priced out if everyone has their own thing?

      @Hulu Ads! Ads everywhere! 🤪

Literally no one under 65 cares about live TV. The diversified model (i.e ads) can die in a fire. There's really nothing to recommend here.

“Customers” and “paying customers” are different cohorts.

I think sports and live events are the only content that makes sense for live TV.

Every streaming service combined costs less than a decent sized cable TV package, and people still pay for that shit.

I’ve noticed it to be the elderly folks who don’t want to stream or get streaming devices. They’re very comfortable with the remote and flipping through channels.

Ever heard of MVPD? That’s meant to solve this exact problem.

Only if you want to buy those titles not already on the platform. For example, you could potentially buy GoT on Amazon Prime video, but watch all other content on Amazon for the standard monthly subscription fee. Allows you to be flexible enough on what to spend on and only if you want to.

This is a really bad argument. You can't justify something by comparing to a even more horrible thing.

When the position is "no one will pay for it because it's too expensive", "people are already paying more" is a great argument.

Yes. And they’ll be dead soon.

That will pass. Currently studios are overoptimistic and think they will make a lot by rolling out their “Netflix”. The trick is - they won’t. There will not be enough customers to cover the cost of running the service + loss of licensing revenue. What is especially interesting is that show creators usually get a revenue share so studios are not only losing money but also souring relationship with the creators.

Says someone from the company who just dropped 100 million just to stream “Friends” for a single year. 😂

Do you know why Netflix paid so much for a single year of Friends? Because Netflix original content is a river of shit, about 95% of no one cares about. People subscribe to Netflix for the non Netflix content. Once Netflix loses all of their content from Disney, WarnerMedia, and now likely NBCUniversal, they will be bleeding customers with nothing promising on the horizon.

HBO. Random Netflix shows are getting GoT numbers. Check our investors letter.

    • HBO NKSUx0
Correction. Random Netflix shows get internationally what GoT gets domestically. According to Nelson nothing in your catalog comes close domestically to what GoT is getting.

There is a reason why the world stops every Sunday night to talk about HBO shows yet no one has ever even heard of Sex Education.

Nielsen, LOL. They don't even track laptop or mobile usage. You believe what you want to believe. At the end of the day, only sub number and ARPU matter.

    • HBO NKSUx0
HBO still has more subs than Netflix does. Netflix has never beaten HBO on subs (though recently Netflix has come close). And with HBO soon gaining all of Warner’s catalog, and Netflix losing all of Fox/Disney/Warner, I have a feeling it will be awhile before Netflix catches up, if ever.

Nielson does track mobile and laptop usage. They collect streaming data on the router level.

Netflix dwalfs HBO in revenue. Don't kid yourself on those international TV subscribers. HBO barely gets $1 per user.

And Nielson tracks TV numbers by running surveys in their sampling households that they pay. It's a dinosaur company trying to survive in digital era.

@HBO guess what service I subscribe for one month a year? Subscribe, watch new seasons of Silicon Valley/GoT/Westworld, unsubscribe. While I cannot unsubscribe from Netflix - because every weekend me and my kids need our Saturday morning cartoon (3Below is ok, She-Ra is nice, looking forward to next season of Dragon Prince, Transformers series is coming out next year).

      Breadth of contents is important.

Most of these streaming services won't get enough audiences to survive. Not unlike the search engine war. There may be a few winners as content is exclusive. So far, only Netflix is a lock. None of the others are profitable, not even close.

Netflix must be scared shitless of losing all of their content. There is a reason why they paid 100 million just to stream “Friends” for a single year.

Come next year, once Disney, WarnerMedia, and NBCUniversal release their streaming services, Netflix’s catalog will be nothing but a river of shitty original content no one cares about.

People may watch Friends to fill the gap, but it's originals that sign users up and keep them around.

The 100m number for Friends is wrong btw. Someone somewhere rumored that and media latched onto it. Why bother finding out the truth if a rumor is enough to get the clicks.

It is most definitely not a rumor.

Although not officially decided, Netflix will likely lose Friends end of the year and it will be exclusive to WMs upcoming streaming service.

@HBO trick is - customers will not care about Netflix losing Friends. They are not subscribing to watch Friends, they are watching Friends because it’s there. It is same as browsing the TV channels - you keep skipping channels out of boredom and eventually settle for something random. Customers will browse Netflix and watch something else. They will not leave for a new service just to watch Friends. Or they will try a new service but forget to cancel Netflix.

This has indeed increased piracy already. Latest data shows that piracy is on the rise again after steady decline over the past decade.

Welcome to why cable did the bundle. It works in your favor. Either way you'll pay the same monthly fee. However do you want more content or less...

I literally watched only a couple channels when I had cable. I’m fine with my 3 streaming services. What I liked was being able to see Friends whenever I wanted to watch.
