Top paying companies in the bay area?

Autodesk jdhxuxbf
May 2 260 Comments

I'm a SWE with Masters and 8 YOE but feel like I'm very underpaid (TC: 200K).

I've been leet coding for the past 3 months and feel like I'm ready to interview with the top companies.

Which companies should I interview with to get the Max TC?

FB, Netflix, Uber, Airbnb (not Google unless you can get them to match competing offer).

I saw it too. People are wrong on the internet, nothing new.

@onjetplane: you get the same number of RSUs every year irrespective of the value of the RSU at the time of vest. But with public companies, once it is vested it is as good as money. You can hold your stock in hopes that it increases in value but that is exactly like investing in that company. You can choose to invest somewhere else with that money.

RSU in a public company == dollar equivalent.

So, if the RSU was less than it's value at grant, you lost money.

You said you could loose [sic] 2-3 years of equity if the stock drops. Unless you’re a fucking idiot sticking it out at a private company that’s failing, that’s just wrong and a terrible way to plan career moves.
      May 12
    • Facebook / Engonjetplane
If investing in private companies was dumb, VCs wouldn’t exist.

And finally, don’t optimize for your minimum possible comp in a given year. Optimize for your expected comp and let it average out over the years.
      May 12
    • New / EngSharmaG
Dude. Get off your high horse. Im not working for a private company right now. Optimizing for expected comp includes not joining a near-IPO company. You seem dense.
      May 12
    • Facebook / Engonjetplane
What the ever loving fuck? Questioning dumbasses who suggest that near-ipo stock is some magically doomed asset class isn’t a high horse.
      May 13
    • Facebook / Engonjetplane
In what scenario do you lose 2-3 years of equity by joining a near-ipo company? Seriously. Make up some numbers. I dare you to give a halfway-plausible scenario.

Some companies tax at time of IPO (like Pinterest). Some tax at time of lockout ending (which sounds like what Uber is doing). That's good news for Uber employee's because right now the company is trading at a $59B valuation. If you were taxed at $68B, then you'd be really unhappy.

@AirEvryWhr Why would I want to cause damage? I have stock here. I stood up for myself because carebnb was lying and putting words in my mouth. Nothing wrong with that. You’re a well known troll and I don’t need to justify myself to you. Anyway I edited my comment to remove the details about the internal messes.
      May 5
    • You’ve edited your comments for more than just “to remove the details about internal messes.”

You’ve edited them enough that people just getting to this thread this morning will be confused by some of the other comments/reactions. Lmao

bolo, please stop posting. You’re a negative representation of those of us who work here and care about having respectful dialogue and mature communication. I sincerely hope that you don’t still work at Airbnb.
      May 5
    • Airbnb boIo
bee & bee, exactly what is so negative? After the guy from Amazon demanded I keep talking to him three times, I told him I don’t need to reply to him just because he insists i keep talking. Then I told our coworker off for “manpologizing” for me. I am under no obligation to be “respectful” when a guy is trying to force me to do something. I sincerely hope you don’t actually believe that women have to be polite when telling someone “no.”

Men reading this, take notes: when you tell a woman she is required to do something to please you, she is under no obligation to politely say no. She can say no however rudely she wants, especially when you ignore her polite hints twice.

      @bolo

Google was not trying to correct your grammar, they were referencing The Matrix. Pretty sure It’s a meme not a personal attack.

It’s relatively clear that you didn’t want to continue that discussion, because you just stated that its ‘too hard to explain’ rather than trying to explain. However, it totally makes sense that ppl on blind would still want you to explain, we just want your insight!

You attacked @amazons personality for being appropriately curious about a company they don’t work at... thats why they/other commenters are pushing back against you.

It’s fucked that people assume everyone on Blind is a guy. Maybe that person is sexist, maybe just unaware, maybe just an honest slip from a typically aware person. However, nobody knew you were a woman before you commented that you were.

I Agree with you. Women can say no however rudely they want when men tell them they are required to do something to please them.

But the dynamic in the original interaction had no such social hierarchy or hedonism from @amazon. They just wanted your help and knowledge so that we all can live better lives.

Being as rude as you want, without the appropriate social context is just being a dick.
      May 5
    • Airbnb boIo
@xWfO11 Thanks for telling me about the meme. Hasn’t heard that one.

I thought I made it clear to Amazon I was a woman and didn’t want to talk (the “guy at the party” comment and when i said he couldn’t have my number, which I originally wrote then deleted because I wanted to make my message more clear). Maybe he just wanted more info, but I thought he pushed too hard.

Facebook depends on the team. Most teams I have been on are the most diverse in any company I have worked in my 8 years in the industry. It is true that some orgs are not diverse. Unfortunately some of them also happen to be high impact orgs (like ads and ML). It is a shame that it is risky to transfer there because of the lack of diversity

It's good if you have family and can get a job at one of the top paying companies, especially if both spouses are high earners. Bay area has some of the best schools in California. Also good area to live if you are single and either female or gay. Terrible place for single heterosexual male. No TC will replace a decent dating scene.

Idk why people think the dating scene is so bad here. It’s going to be bad everywhere if you’re unattractive and don’t make an effort

I lived in Bay Area for 4 years and in LA now. The difference is night and day. Yes you can have success in Bay Area if you are very attractive and have great social skills. I'm short and pretty introverted, but I have much better success here. Here just being financially secure and somewhat interesting is enough to find a girlfriend.

Young Interviewers at pre IPO companies have very strict standards almost to the point there is no way you can get a pass mark unless you practiced the question for multiple times before. Questions at Google may be harder but they are better at leading the candidates to success with hints at good timing and understanding various solutions while these inexperienced interviewers at pre ipo require bug free without multiple hints and with speed.

  • Lol at people including Airbnb in FANG. It's a great company but not FANG. FANG are a set of publicly traded tech stocks that have had huge upside in the last few years. The acronym was coined by Jim Cramer. FANG = Facebook, Amazon, Netflix l, Google for the record

For staff engineer role, very difficult to clear interviews and get leveled as staff. You have to do really well
