I keep seeing people ranting over their tc at microsoft. Mostly senior people. So I was wondering if I am also being underpaid as compared to market or not. Here are my details: Base - ~110k Bonus I got after 1st year - 10% base Stock refresh - $3k to vest in 5 years Joining bonus - 15k + 5k after taxes relo Joining stock - $120,000 for 3.5 years If I calculate all these and assume I will not get any promo for the next 3 years and with 10% bonus and 3% merit each year, my tc comes out to be approx ~178k each year which includes 9k 401k match, 1k espp, 1k hsa, 1k gym. TL;DR: How does ~$178k each year for the first 4 years at ms for a new grad look like when compared to outside world? Edit: This is for Seattle/Redmond. So no 10% state tax.
There are like ten companies in the world who would even be in that stratosphere for a recent grad hire. Half of those companies are on Blind...Enjoy that pay and work hard for now. You're off to a good start.
Thanks. Have been doing decent so far but not sure how to get to the next level. Manager keeps saying doing good, as expected but all you need is little more time before next level. Not sure whether switching teams would be wise or not.
I remember when I was relatively new, and my manager kept saying I needed a little more time before the next level. It bothered me at the time, but in hindsight, I don't disagree. In tech, it's often not about raw programming ability but about consistently proven judgment, and that simply takes time to demonstrate. See if he can give you specific milestones he wants you to accomplish. That will help you know what to work on so you feel like you're progressing -- and will hold him accountable to advance you if you are. I would not recommend changing teams within the first 2-3 years unless you're sure you're being held back. Otherwise you'll be back to square one proving yourself. Keep in mind that ultimately titles don't mean as much as they appear. Focus on learning all you can and earning all you can instead of simply chasing higher titles.
178k for a 22 year old is ridonculous
