I’m considering a transfer from SF to London for work. Comp will be the same, relocation is solid, but a few questions: 1) should my comp stay in USD or change to GPB? 2) what other financial factors to consider? 3) anyone else done this? What do you think? Moving to london for a few years is something I’m personally excited to do, just considering professional/financial factors. Thanks for the help.
London is comparable to the Bay Area, so with the same comp you are going to be fine. One important thing to remember that here is high taxes on capital gains, so if you’re given stock options you will have to let go more then half of them. I’d switch to gpb because it’s more convenient to have a British account, you will need it for a rent payments.
One can avoid capital gains by selling RSUs immediately. Would that work?
Comp will be the same?!! Not sure how much they are paying you but with a sf comp in London you’ll be king!
Agreed - you’ll be better off in London on SF comp (I moved London to SF). Switch comp to GBP. That way taxes are handled automatically in the UK.
I moved from india to us and have friends who moved from london to sf/mtv. The comp will change. Basically your base salary and benefits will change. Stocks should remain same(next refresh would be acc to london stock refreshes).
It's specifically stated that comp will be the same.
