Hello, I'm transitioning from active duty USAF as an E-6 after 7 years and have been interviewing around SV. Have been getting good results and currently waiting for offers after recruiters have told me I should be getting them from Twitch and FB. What kind of comp should I be expecting and do you guys think my .mil career experience will count for 'years of experience' in terms of compensation? Field is netsec/incident response btw.
If what you were doing in the USAF is directly related to what you’re being hired to do then yes it’ll count. Thanks for your service and best of luck with the transition! Best way to figure out what comp you can expect is know what level you interviewed for
Twitch was L5 or L6, FB was E4 or E5. And yes my job in the AF is cyber warfare so it's a direct transition.
Weird that they didn’t give you a ballpark first. The offer shouldn’t be a mystery. You should know what your market range is. You should also know what they traditionally pay. They usually tell you along the process. Do you have an idea? Did you discuss a ballpark before getting to the offer stage?
To be honest not really because the way my pay works in the military is weird and doesn't directly translate. So I just told them I wanted to hear their offers first. Maybe that was the wrong move but what's done is done I guess.
Oh, well look at current market rates and add about 20%. Then think about a bonus, and stock options. You should calculate that first. That way you know what you should see as an offer. One thing’s for sure, you need to know what you’re worth.
There are a bunch of officers in the valley, but I've only seen a handful of enlisted. Congrats on making the jump! You must be super impressive. Did you go through one of the vet transition programs?
Nope, just put together my resume and applied.
My interviews didn't talk about rank at all. They were only interested in my experiences. :)
Also ex-military. Got an offer from Facebook in Security. DM me.
Why are you leaving the Air Force? Don’t you get a guaranteed pension if you are there for 10 years? Why leave before qualifying for it
It's 20 years and being enlisted for that long has a lot of downsides. Plus the pension is based only on base pay (50% of that after 20 years of service) which is maybe 40% of my pay to begin with.
In 20 years, you can get retirement pay. But usually at the 10 year mark, you’ve made your decision. The military is great but civilian life is more lucrative and has more opportunities. I was in for 10 years. I left because I was able to make more than the physicians I was working with, day one, out of the military. Money was my biggest motivator. Education was second, and finally — I knew I wanted a job that allowed me to have less risk, be home more and grow with my kids and family.
DM me if you need advice. I left the Navy after 10 years of honorable service in 2012. I joined tech straight out of the military.
Thanks
