Indian on H-1B. Just have a plan and want to know if its feasible. Job in Seattle now. Applying for Canada PR. Can I stay close to border ( In Canada) and commute to my job in Seattle everyday? Basically i want to fulfill 3 years residence in Canada out of 5 years (PR is valid for 5 years. If i stay 3 years in Canada i can become Canadian citizen). This way i can become Canadian citizen working in US right? Then apply for US PR after that. Is this possible? Did anyone pursue this?
Your US PR will still take the same amount of time. As the quota is by birth not by citizenship of country
True, the one big advantage of Canadian citizenship is that one can work here on TN which is a much lesser hassle compared to H1B
There is no advantage in doing that unless you want to be a Canadian citizen working in US on h1b
Why? He will be eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship.
Edit: the following is not accurate. I fixed my error in reply section. Nevertheless it is still a risky idea and I wouldn't recommend it at all. Canadians don't count days that you exit/re-enter as days spend in Canada. So forget about this plan and decide for one country. Edit: also you must be joking to consider commute from Canada to Seattle on a daily basis. You will spend the $ that you make in excess to C$ in fuel and 6 hours waste time per day.
Not correct.
I'm not talking about keeping PR status. But if he intends to apply for citizenship, he has to prove 1095 presence days in Canada. Canadians record every re-entry and he will not qualify for any day he re-enters. Also without Canadian employment it'll be hard for him to qualify for PR.
This works better with Detroit Windsor than with Seattle. You will go crazy with the insane commute
Your idea is great, but way ahead of it's time. Wait till a hyperloop is built between Seattle and Vancouver. As Indians, we would be waiting for our green card number to come up then as well.
When is this loop supposed to be built?
There is always a chance of getting pulled in for processing/verification. I once spent 90minutes in line for no reason and have you thought about handling these immigration officers every single day? It’s just not practical.
Check on canadavisaform, many are already doing it
I don't think this is a feasible strategy. I don't think the companies in Seattle are that close to the border. It's about a 2 Hour commute one way. And as someone else pointed out, they might not count the days you leave the country so you might lose out on the PR as well as the Citizenship. There is a SAP office in Vancouver and there are Amazon and Microsoft offices too. Granted the pay is lower but working in Vancouver and living here would be better than the daily commute.
How’s the pay in vancouver?
Which company?
Forgot to mention that even if you become a Canadian citizen, the fact that you were born in India means that you would have to wait decades to get a GC anyways. Having a Canadian citizenship doesn't get you any benefits in that regard
OP must be going after TN visa
TN visa is safer than H1B though with all those rejections.
This jugaadu gotta be Desi!
He said he is desi 🙄
