Traveling after Graduation?

Hey Blind. I'm graduating from school in a week and have signed an offer for a full-time SWE position. Currently my start date is early January, but I can move that by a couple of weeks if I want to. So I was thinking it might be a good idea to travel? What do you think? Worth it? No? I have about $90k saved right now and will receive a decent starting bonus, but I'm still finding the travel price hard to justify. If you say yes, * Where is good to visit in January? I was looking at the southern hemisphere, but it looks like either flights from the west US are really expensive compared to Europe/Asia, or the country is somewhat unsafe/politically unstable. Europe and East Asia are probably cold? Dunno. Never left the good ol' US of A before. * Is it worth it if I don't have friends to go with (everyone has to school/work)? I'm not the party type and I'm friendly but somewhat introverted. * Also worried I'll get bored. I'm already bored at school and I'm just sitting here waiting for my job so I feel interested when I do work again. I'm not the "relax" kind of person, I just get bored and want to work. Maybe it's because American life is boring and I need travel, though.

Yea take a vacation! It will be worth it! I would personally visit NYC or europe. But if you want to go somewhere with warmer weather try southern hemisphere like you said.

Do it, take some time and learn how to enjoy life outside of work and school. Its something not enough people know how to do. Doesnt even have to be travel, could pick up a nee hobby or learn something unrelated to your career.

For Europe, Norwegian Airlines will take u from Oakland to Europe roundtrip for as little as $500. From wherever u end up, flights or trains are cheap. I'd recommend Portugal, Spain, Croatia, Hungary....these places are beautiful, full of history, have anything you'd want to do, and are still very cheap places to vacation. What you're thinking of is something everyone should do. It's one of maybe a few times where you will have a real vacation. For Asia, plenty of places to go where u can live on a few dollars a day. Thinking Thailand, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Indonesia... Take the time for yourself - this opportunity won't come often. Once you r working, vacations are not the same.

New Zealand. Worth every penny I spent on it and I'd do it over. It really requires at least 2 weeks so it's hard to do with a regular work schedule.

Hit up Saint Petersburg. Russia is cheap as hell, a great place to travel if you are not some pampered snowflake. Plus you can easily travel to similarly cool places like Finland, Estonia, Sweden. Culture is amazing in Saint Petersburg with places like the Hermitage and Kunstkamera. If you are worried take some Airbnb experiences. The Northern Lights are truly amazing.

Absolutely do it. No question. Enjoy it. And stay in hostels - youā€™ll love it as a solo traveler. šŸ˜Š

Nah just chill at home, maybe start learning some new skills or look into investments for your money. Traveling is really overrated. Everybody and their dog is doing it and talking it up, but these days with globalization a lot of places are becoming very similar to each other and it gets boring pretty quickly. I feel like at this point when you ask about traveling, you basically just get an echo chamber of similar vague answers about how it is amazing and life changing and now is your only chance to do it. So far I haven't really ever heard any actual good specific answer on what you really get out of it that's worth so much money/time and I know for a fact that my 45+ year old co-workers definitely are still able to take international vacations from time to time. Also if you do this trip you'll likely be pretty exhausted by the time you get back to start your job, both physically and mentally. That's not ideal. Especially since this is your first job you want to be well rested to be able to learn and ramp up quickly and make a good impression. But of course that's all just my opinion, so feel free to ignore.

You sound like the guy who complains the whole vacation

That's 2 weeks of missed pay. Start working, accrue some vacation and take that trip getting paid.
