Twitter vs Google

New grad.
Google comp is ~160k but has better refreshers.
Twitter comp is 166k.

twitter: on a backend team under cortex. I think it’s from splitting the signals team up.

google: Youtube. Team matching happens closer to start date.

I want to optimize for career and personal growth. $$ wise I’m fairly sure that google wins due to refreshers, and WLB wise both should be around the same.

Would love to hear reasoning.

Wow it’s so lopsided. Looking at the past poll results, twitter actually came ahead once... tf

Based on what I've heard, YouTube has better WLB and is more stable.

I’m fairly sure that google wins out in that regard due to refreshers

Sure, or even stock growth. But even if there was an actual monetary difference the value of Google on your resume will have a huge career growth impact

Cortex is a pretty good org to be in atm. Lots of changes happening at twitter and cortex is driving a fair amount of it. Pretty new codebase too so room for making some serious impact. But yeah as some folks said above, google will be better on resume. Google also has way more product teams you can swap to if you don’t like your work however career growth can be slow there.

On the refresher front, what data points do you have to say Google is better for sure? Just curious.

Yes that’s correct. It’s similar to how Amazon does it.

Oh well. No wonder initial numbers are so high then. How do you deal with churn then?

Initial numbers are not comparably high to FANG generally. There’s no 4 year cliff due to their equity target, which is nice. In a recession, theoretically, Twitter’s model can be better.

Ah the equity target thing sounds like just another school of equity refresh plan, compared to FANG. Can equity target differ for folks on the same level? Say if I perform stronger this half than the previous one but not yet promotion ready, would I get a bigger refresher? I assume you still get a bigger stock refresher when you get a promotion?

I believe in practice it can differ but usually not by much. Your boss can adjust your target up and down each cycle.

You’d only get a refresher if the stock goes down or boss raises target (which isn’t typical).

I like being in the city but there is 0 way I’m living there—it’s too expensive... and also all my friends are in South Bay

I'm kind of assuming you're in the Bay area right now, but that's a huge point for Google. I wouldn't want to deal with the commute or a move and the rent hike.

Twitter is a one trick pony. There is room to go in so many different directions at Google.
