Twitter vs Twilio

Twilio / Other Trees18
May 26, 2018 42 Comments

Have accepted an offer as a partner engineer at Twitter. Am way more interested in Twitter's product and business than I am in Twilio's and believe I can learn more at Twitter

Additionally, Twitter role has little to no travel requirement offering me bettrr WLB. While at Twilio I have to travel extensively

Financially however, Twilio stock and revenue has been on the up while Twitter seems to be struggling.

Which company overall do you think has better long term career value?

Update: For the folks voting Twilio. Why?

One of these companies is still growing 40-60% YoY and has greenfield projects ahead. Consider the growth potential wisely.

Twilio has accumulated a lot of tech debt, they seem to focus on adding more and more features without paying the cost of making their software more maintainable.

Twillio has a better foothold in the future. Twitter is hemorrhaging users and hasn’t innovated in at least 3 years.

Twitter however has better learning opportunities because of the diversity of challenges. Both bc they have consumer and enterprise divisions. Additionally they have both APIs and full fledged products

Twilio on the other hand just has APIs and only plays in the enterprise space

OP seems you joined Twilio? Welcome! What was the thought process there? Poll and comments seem to weight towards Twitter (not trolling, actually curious)

Both Twilio and Twitter are awesome. Engineering wise, you’ll get exposure to better scalability solutions at Twitter and have the added benefit of your work making the press very often / having an outsized impact in real time. That said, I have friends at Twilio that have very good things to say about the company. You won’t go wrong with either.

Twitter has more challenges as a company, but will you be exposed to them as a partner engineer? As a partner engineer, aren't you exposed to your partners' challenges more than the company you represent?

Partner engineers at Twitter usually get to, and often need to navigate the entire stack. It’s not strictly partner engineering at, say companies like Palantir. I’d imagine Twilio would be similar, but would involve client visits and understanding their use case and needs deeply. But you’re right the benefits of working at scale are slightly watered down if you’re in partner eng at Twitter.

At Twilio you don't navigate the entire stack....it's all about APIs and usually it's the same set of APIs. The use case is by and large very similar from client to client so things here get to be very monotonous

    Twilio is public?

Seems like very little comparison, Twitter may not be doing *as* well stock wise but it's a high profile too tier company. Although the travel would be a plus for me...

Plus if Twitter offers rsu, just sell rsu then. Faangt is never a bad choice over twilio.

Twitter. I think the problems they are solving are more distributed system cyntric whil twilio is more in open space. Do you mind sharing the numbers?

Partner engineering would be better at Twilio imo because of the strong b2b focus. Twitter ads partner eng doesn’t get as much exposure to customer as Twilio’s. And as a partner engineer you won’t be exposed to the much larger scalability challenges as other backend engineers at Twitter.
