Two Google Internships vs Google/Microsoft Internships?

I need to decide whether to accept a second Google internship or a Microsoft offer. I know that getting a second Google internship would better my chances at getting hired for a full time position, but having two big companies on my resume would make it stronger (?)
Who would you hire? Some one with two Google Internships or someone with two internships at two different big companies?

All my friends who interned at google their senior year never got return offers and had to re recruit all of senior year. They said google had been extremely bad about rehiring interns in the exit interviews, etc. This might not be important to you but letting you know just in case...

Dude, that exchange was a million years ago, I thought you were replying to my last comment.

Regarding your original reply, you're missing a few commas, so it's really your fault when people don't understand what you're writing.

You must be angry because you're misunderstood a lot.

Absolutely, during the course of 3 months these interns will become incorrigible and have too many bad habits to count. Lol. I can’t believe you seriously think that. Let’s not encourage lazy narratives here. @e6dfc6

definitely one of each is better for your resume. And for good reasons. You’ll know far more about what you want to do after one at each, and having both companies compete for you when you convert to full time will push up your price.

Depends upon org / team. For ex:

      Azure >> GCP
      MSR >> Google

In general, Google is better than MSFT

Nah msr in academic circles is still pretty much the place to go for industry labs. Google doesn’t really have an equivalent. Google research is applied (I.e., engineering focused) you can’t just have Leslie Lamport with a white board

There are theoretical groups in google headed by some high profile people. They’re not officially google research. You just don’t know about them.

Msr is now broken up into pieces. Only msr labs does non applied and that group is small. They are encouraged to make product impact (i.e. applied). Many high profile great people left. Not surprisingly, many went to google. Many were moved into product groups to do applied research.

Msr was a drain on resource and after billg left, no one was batting for msr. There were concerns that it would turn into xerox parc.

Jokes aside, if you see something, please say something. Maybe say something anonymously on here (not kidding this time), otherwise you're talking like it's common knowledge/experience that there's unethical behavior routinely going on. It isn't my experience, so do be more specific what it is you're referring to.

Going from G to MS will make me question why you did so badly at G the previous year you were forced to downgrade so much. G to fb would make sense. G to a well funded startup would make sense. If you want to go to a country club that bad just take the summer off and enjoy your last bit of free time before going to work everyday becomes the norm.

Obviously you have a beef with MS, that's cool Mario.

I know several interns who had internships in both companies. All had offers. Typically having offers from both will help you negotiate better with either or even a different company.

Sorry about the bad joke but you gotta admit going from G to MS is a bit of a downgrade and while op is trying to diversify their options it looks on paper to be due to a rejection from the more “selective” company. Microsoft had its day but right now their software and problem set is 2nd or even 3rd tier and middle management layoffs have become the norm. Obviously this isn’t such a steep downgrade as going from G to HP or G to Cisco, but it raises eyebrows.

Internship, like job interviews, are as much about you learning about the company and deciding if it is a good fit for you as it is for the company to decide if they want you. If you loved your Google internship and want to be full time there then do another Google internship but try for a different department. Large companies can be very different between orgs.

I think it is very good to try out multiple companies. You might love it at Microsoft and you might not. Better to learn this in a few month internship than to get a full time job at a company you regret a few months in.

Having a few months internship at multiple companies shows you are already highly valuable. Having a few months full time positions at multiple companies looks really bad and will be career limiting.

I give this advice independent of company. You have to decide which culture fits you best.

Microsoft internships are MUCH better socially, and you probably don't need much of a resume boost if you're pulling these kinds of internships anyway

If op doesn’t get hired at google msft would easily extend an offer. Whereas the other way around wouldn’t work so much. Best chance to land at goog is to intern there. Best chance to land at msft is to also intern at goog.

An internship at MSFT will land you a full time offer if you don't mess up. A second internship at Google may mean you don't have to do interviews again and snag an offer, but it may mean you do have to interview. A non trivial amount of interns don't get return offers at Google.

You need to weigh the risk/reward there. I started out of college at MSFT and moved to GOOG, both good places to work.

Google 100%. Showing on your resume that google wanted you back would be a pretty good indication that you are a rock star.

    Take the second G internship:
1.it increases your chances of getting a G FTE offer. Since G is a much better company than MS thats a big advantage.
    2. MS is no longer a brand name. It used to be once, but not any longer. Having it on your CV will be much less stronger than having two G internships.
    3. There are higher chances that you will work on interesting projects @G than at MS. Even if you dont, just by being exposed to G's frameworks, infra, and code you will become a better professional. At MS you will mostly learn how not to design systems and how not to write code.

There are plenty of boring and shitty jobs at G or MSFT. Better to be in a better team at one company than working for the sake of resume/brand name.

If you're going with Google definitely try to join another team. You will probably have priority when choosing teams over other interns (at least at Amazon you do). DO NOT go back to the same team, you will learn more in another one.

Get diversity on your resume. Both are good companies. Make sure you join a team which has interests that align with you. MS has a lot of cool teams where you can grow.

If the offer is in Bay Area, I would say go with Google. If it's Seattle, go with MSFT.

Focus on growth and impact so you can convert your internship to full time upon finishing.
