Two Sigma or Google

I am New Grad and got offers from these 2 companies. In terms on compensation I think there is much more room at Two Sigma (I heard they can have crazy bonuses even 100% base, actually any insight on that is welcomed, and much feaster raises, promotions). My opinion: Although it is something totally different I would like to try them both. I know Google from internship and loved it there, on the other hand loved interviews and people at Two Sigma, their generous offer in contrary to Google low ball initial offer. Heard a lot of good opinions that it is smaller, has top talents and less politics and boredom than big corporation as Google. I am even tempted to try it but the minuses are: very poor choice of locations - I could try NYC for e.g. a year but I feel that it is not best place for me for long term. I also heard that Google would most probably downlevel in case if coming back after a couple of years. Any advice? Offers: Two sigma 145 base, 50 guaranteed bonus 25 sign on Google: 120 base, 230 stock, 25 sign on Do you think I can still negotiate with Google? I feel that even if they match currently, Two Sigma bonus might be much better after a year. Can I use it as leverage?

I would go to Two Sigma if they have a good team/project matching system.

Well I am female, so dating is actually more a problems here :P I am also more into outdoors and feel that I would prefer something more peaceful, closer to mountains etc.

Thanks for answer. It is quite funny: I see so many posts on blind saying that tech people would love to work in NYC where dating scene is better but it is hard to find a great job in there. While I found the tech job I am really excited about which is available only in NYC but as a girl would prefer west coast dating scene :P

Since you are a new grad you will learn a lot at 2sigma, more ownership & impact. At google it might take you a while to work on something impactful. You will have no problem moving to Bay Area after a few years if you want to since you have two sigma on your resume.

Congrats .. could you please share your google offer numbers thanks

Two Sigma may be a better choice between the two since they are known to be even more selective than Google. However, both are very reputed and one needs to be lucky to have such wonderful choices. You must be very good.

Great offers! Don’t forget Google annual target bonus at 15%, which makes your offers pretty much the same in comp. 😛 Hopefully someone from TS can chime in whether a majority of folks exceed their target bonus each year. I’ve heard you won’t get more than the guaranteed the first year.

Didn’t you already negotiate with Google? That’s higher end of L3 already. You won’t be able to push much higher based on comp speculation, maybe a bit more sign on if you push it. Curious what was the Google “low ball” offer, the standard 150-160k? :) On which to go to, personally I didn’t like Two Sigma and I wouldn’t like to work as a SWE in Finance. Most of their stack is in Java iirc. Possibility of much better work here but a lot of work here is shit so choose carefully.

What’s wrong with java? Isn’t Google at least 20-30% Java? I don’t think I’m even including Android.

Google infra is exclusively C++ at least what I’ve seen. (Was referring to 2S data infrastructure which I believe is what most work on, basically Hadoop and other analytics backend tools.) Nothing wrong with Java for application development in general.

2 sigma and nyc is not good for outdoor and peaceful activity. You have to leave the city. But I welcome you to nyc lol. Dw about down level right now.

Did you get matched to a team at TS? Do you like the projects? Where do you want to be in 2-5 years in terms of industry, what technologies you’re working with, and career?

Microsoft geek_girl OP Jun 21, 2018

I like both teams at Two Sigma and Google. Currently I am interested in some backendish, infrastructure stuff, this the idea I had after my internships. The projects at Google have incomparable scale this is definitely the pros in here. In case of my career I feel that I wouldn't like to spend just 20 years in one company. I would be very interested to try both: Google and some smaller company with top engineers and good reputation (finances also sound interesting in here). I am just not sure which one to start with and how hard it can be to go to the other one after some time. Also Google seems to be at its peak, TS grows probably faster...
