Hello! I am trying to transition from an on-prem infrastructure solutions architect (6 yoe TC $140k) to a SA for either AWS or GCP. Both have operations here in LA. I got all the way to an on-site with Amazon for an Enterprise Solutions Architect role but didn't get the job. Since the interview I've been trying to improve as a candidate for the cloud role I want. I got my AWS Solutions Architect Associate cert on Thursday, trying to figure out my next move. I need to gain more cloud experience so I'm going to try a lift-and-shift project at my regular job. I think python will be useful so I'm going to learn some basic python as well. What I'm having a hard time deciding on is what cert I should aim for next. Should I keep going for AWS certs and get an AWS SysOps cert or should I get a Google Associate Cloud Engineer cert?
You sound pretty much like me. I have to a if onprem infrastructure architect experience but not so much on big public cloud . I too completed aws SAA recently. I like to set my self a goal when learning new technologies, like getting certified. I am now learning azure and plan to take SA cert. The key is to have experience to back up the certain.

Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?
Two questions to ponder: 1) Are you sure investing on certs is the way to go? 2) do you want to be seen as a Cloud Solutions Architect or an AWS Specialist? ..you probably will say both but you need to commit to going depth or breadth. There are tones of big companies hiring AWS architects not just Amazon.
Both great points, you've got me thinking now. 1. Having certs has never gotten me anywhere in my current role. I'm much more interested in the knowledge I would pick up along the way. Doing the ACG class for my last cert taught me a tremendous amount. 2. My goal is to work for either Google or Amazon (or really anyone FAANG). They both have offices close to me and it's always been a personal goal to work for one of the big tech companies. In that context I guess I would say more generalist and then specialize once I landed a role?
2. Not sure how old you are.. but be more patient :). You have time and are employed and sounds like you can lots of chances for more hands on experience. Experience >> Theory which is where certs fall under. Keep practicing and getting more practical examples for interviews and try again in 3-6 months.
