US India trade dispute brewing

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/its-official-india-is-trumps-next-target-in-the-trade-wars/2019/03/05/39000298-3f34-11e9-a44b-42f4df262a4c_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.d70d9c14922c Interesting development, on one hand US India trade is an extreme example of an unbalanced trade That will eventually need to be more normalized. On the other hand the US-India are poised to become ever more important strategic Allies in the Indio Pacific region. I actually don’t think these things are mutually exclusive. Will be Fascinating to watch the US India relationship over the next 10 years.

It will be interesting to see. I think with Trump all over China with the trade war, it was a good time for India to get some investment away from China. I feel Modi kind of missed that bus.

The last 30 years was the time to make a buck in China. Increasingly obvious that not going to be a big of a growth driver going forward. The reality is over the next 10 years Indias hands are tied. They’re surrounded by rivals China, Russia, Pakistan, Iran. The US and India will be drawn closer together because of their shared interests in the region

Does this mean Maggie and Kurkure in Indian stores are going to get expensive ? 😑

Microsoft wave 🏄‍♂️ Mar 5, 2019

As if they are cheap now.

Does India really export much? I mean is this a fight worth fighting?

eBay funny how Mar 5, 2019

That’s the point of concern, it doesn’t.

Amazon HlqC56 Mar 5, 2019

It does if you include services and while this dispute so far is over physical trade it'll become a major flash point if it expands to include outsourcing. Trump ran for election on ending outsourcing of American jobs so it's not inconceivable he's going to go there.

Amazon HlqC56 Mar 5, 2019

Why are India and the US poised to become allies? Historically India has positioned itself as being against the US and sided with Russia in the cold war. I think in a long term sense the US will not trust India to be a reliable ally since it's reasonable to think if India can position itself against the US once, it can and eventually will do so again. Right now India is positioning itself as an outsourcing destination and that is really the only basis of the US/India relationship. They current business alignment seems like it could be temporary and that India's interests could easily shift to be anti American again. Also I hear a lot of anti American sentiment from Indians, a lot of shit about how racist Americans are, crap about natives, slavery, I even heard one Indian call Americans a virus. So I don't think there is a natural alliance there. I think long term India is more likely to be hostile towards the United States and the US knows it.

Not sure where you heard the racist bull 💩 from. Majority of Indians in the US assimilate well to the culture here and Thursday are friends with Americans. Sure they're shy compared to your average immigrant. But they become friends once they get to know you. Also, America sided with Pakistan (a military nation that breeds terrorists and have sworn to destroy India and it's civilization). No wonder India sided with Russia during the cold war. Cold war is over. India is a lot different and more powerful than it was 5 decades ago. I think India and US are natural allies when it comes to democracy, their desire to protect their own way of lives, similar kind of security threats they face.

eBay Yeah Bruh Mar 5, 2019

Indians assimilate well? In which world? They tend to do well economically and keep to themselves but they do not assimilate well although there are exceptions. I'm indian and I've seen so many people constantly crib about Americans being racist, refusing to speak English in team meetings, and countless other actions.

Idk what HlqC56 and Yeah Bruh are smoking. Not only Indians assimilate well here, the youth back in India in all tier1 and tier 2 cities are so in tune with American culture, more so than their own culture. They watch all movies, follow all fashion trends and dig the fast food. Not only does it make sense for India and US to be allies, it is a natural cultural ally as well.

I feel that Trump is just picking fights as a distraction tactic by this point.

Lyft swetool OP Mar 5, 2019

Really? Trade was a pillar of his campaign

Google et2nw8 Mar 5, 2019

Yeah but India has traditionally been a counterweight to China. If anything he should encourage trade with India so that the US has less to lose in a trade confrontation.
