just curious how knowing machine learning can help designer’s career? any thoughts or advice for a newbie ux designer?
It's more like product design problem, know what ml can do vs cannot. You may need to know to work on some applications with heavy ml usage like Google home, assistant, now, etc.
In earlier years, if you design flow layout, it definitely helps if you know something about recommend system
thanks for your insights! are you in a related team? Do most ux designers working in Google home assistant etc team have ml related background? On a side note, im really interested in healthcare and i see great potential in AI x healthcare
If you chose to just get a background of ML i suggest doing online courses / material such as andrew ng's ML on coursera, and to focus in ur grad school on your core field/specialization, but I am not working in UX so take my words with a grain of salt.
ok will try that first. thanks for reading my comments and for the advice :)
ML is a means to end in the context of user experience unless you are switching your career to engineering. You need to acknowledge what problem you are trying to solve first, and why it would make sense to solve that particular problem when the cost of data generation and improving algorithm is very expensive.
I see. makes sense. so as an example, when ur project is somewhat related to ML and if you were to look at portfolio of a designer, would you prefer projects that show some ML knowledge, or would you mainly focus on the problem solving skills? Because based on what you said, i think the later would work too.
If you are solving a problem that uses ML, and if you cannot talk about it in a intelligent manner, then you are at a disadvantage. The level of technical articulation you need at the interview varies as most UX hiring managers don't come from technical backgrounds
Advice: Get to work instead of fixating on buzzwords.
to give you some context, I am going to grad school this yr so i have a little bit of time to explore. thanks for the advice ill try to focus on the basic design principles
Yeah then definitely get the basics right first. There are already enough people in tech chasing the next hot thing without understanding exactly what the thing is.
