Lead a small group of engineers and set the right technical direction for them at least in the context of some projects. Influence others’ work, beyond their own work.
This is pretty much spot on. 5a’s are expected to lead in terms of architecture decisions, organizing the team around a certain project, coming up w impactful things to work on that involve more than just your immediate team, etc.
For your own sake please stay away from Uber. It’s a shitshow. Maybe if Thuan retires then a stronger Engineering culture will come up but right now Uber is shitty. I regret joining 1 years back.

All my friends who joined in 2018 are Miserable because of the politics, shit work, shitty culture, shitty execs, impending layoff etc.
As it was explained to me by an Uber recruiter. 5a is like a junior version of senior. Not a real senior but not a fresher either. 5b is senior for reals.
