I recently interviewed with Uber and was informed that I am going to be offered Senior Engineer role. Currently an SDE 2 at Amazon and I am expecting to get promoted to SDE 3 in 6 months. Does it make sense to leave for Uber? Should I consider other opportunities as well instead of jumping at the first one? I don’t know anything about comp yet.
Isn't amazon Sde3 same as staff everywhere else?
Nope, look at levels.fyi
Yes it is Staff. SDE2 has a wider range at Amazon.
Yes, absolutely. Even if we take your promo for granted (though with Amazon you can never be sure), I would take 5a over SDE3 if you prefer engineering over politics. That being said I was in the exact same spot and didn’t regret my decision to move.
The difference is that when you are promoted you get bottom band of SDEIII which is $240k or so. At a new job you will be negotiating after they’ve decided they want you. It can’t hurt to get other competing offers, then use them to negotiate and get the pay you want at the company you want. You can bring an offer to your manager at Amazon and if you are critical to your team they may Dive and Save, but this is better after promo so they can move you high up in the new band rather than constriction at the current level.
Wait for uber comp. im also in a very similar situation and am just waiting for my h1b transfer. when i got my sde 3 promo package, it was relatively low. I tried talking to my manager but they didnt raise much so i decided to go with uber.
What’s the TC offered by Uber?
