Uber Engineering Manager -> eBay Director?

Honestly, I interviewed on a lark - pretty happy at Uber. But now that I do have it, thinking about it seriously because of the career growth jump. Doesn't look like I'm going to be promoted at Uber anytime soon. I'm at Mgr Level 2. TC is comparable (~500K) though of course, there is the potential of higher upside with Uber stock. Cash is higher with eBay.

Would it be a bad decision to go from Uber to eBay?

If you are happy at Uber don't go to eBay. Work on your promotion there. Uber is a tier 1 company and eBay is tierless.

What’s eBay director offer? Could you provide a breakdown? Also what’s your total year of experience?

Looking at eBay stock, I am concerned with their growth.

In my opinion titles are not normalized across industry, so going for just title with same comp doesn’t make sense. Although, eBay is giving you real money. If you think you will be able to make higher impact and can grow more at eBay, it’s definitely worth it. $500k comp is awesome too 😀

Thanks! It's not just a title change - bigger team and the opportunity to manager first line managers.

Don't M2s at Uber manage other front line managers?

Not all. Some do. No rule around it really. Just depends on your manager and how many people in the team.

Does the 200K yearly stock include annual refreshes?

Delivering results through other managers, while giving enough freedom to them but still be connected to the details at the right level. Having right mechanisms to have checkpoints to make sure you have no blinds spots. It's very different from being a frontline manager where you can go directly to the engineer, tap on their shoulder and get what you want. You got to respect the boundaries or you'll lose their trust

ebay is in a mess. doesn’t make any sense to join them ! you would think smart performance and being in management you can change things but hell no ! tried that too hard and came out of eBay sometime back ! I would strongly advise you against joining!

  • I’m honestly kind of surprised mgr II comp is “only 500k.” Did you join Uber recently?

I know at FB there are L6 managers making significantly more, which is equivalent to our 5b/mgr II.

What is the TC range for L6 managers at FB? Honestly, I might not have negotiated well coming into Uber. Came here a little more than 2 years back.

You should hit 600k as an M2/L6

Really? E6/staff engineers at fb make around 500k

      Meant M2/L7

Ah. Yes that’s more like 700k. But M2 at fb is the 3rd manager level, since they start at M0.

Have you introspected why you were not able to grow beyond your current level at Uber? Not trying to demean, but asking to make sure you understand what you're signing up for if you were never a manager of managers. It's a completely different ballgame. My 2 cents.

Completely agree on it being a different ball game. I've actually done it before, just not at Uber.
