https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/14/nyregion/uber-new-jersey-drivers.html New Jersey fined Uber $649 Million for Saying Drivers Aren’t Employees. New Jersey has demanded that Uber pay $649 million for years of unpaid employment taxes for its drivers, arguing that the ride-hailing company has misclassified the workers as independent contractors and not as employees. A audit uncovered $530 million in back taxes that had not been paid for unemployment and disability insurance from 2014 to 2018. Because of the nonpayment, the state is seeking another $119 million in interest.
🤬 Drivers are not employees
One more reason to invest more in self-driving. If Uber calls them employees, you know what happens next? AOC will make a video demanding Uber to pay for insurance and provide other perks. I thought people would be grateful to Uber because it showed them a way to make money. Uber is a business and not a charitable organization.
Self driving cars is like nuclear fusion.. it's an obvious solution that is technically infeasible but ppl keep bringing it up to sound smart
That doesn’t sound right. Uber only provides a platform to connect drivers with passengers. It is like asking Google to consider YouTube advertisers as employees
Yeah, right that’s how I would think. It’s basically political rather than actually helping anyone — both Uber or the drivers. If Uber can’t provide the benefits of employees, which it can’t, and govt won’t let it run, we will probably have very expensive Uber or no Uber. I dunno how it would play out for expensive Uber’s, but no Uber just means no money for drivers at all. Also, makes me think how are contractors any different that work at various places.
^ In large companies they are often employees of another company. 1099s contractors are different. They usually provide their own equipment and mostly set their own hours, just like Uber drivers.
Uber has been a glorious short, this news will be the gift that keeps on giving. Hope Dara can give more interviews too.
No offense, but is Oath on your short list too?
No honey, the company is part of Verizon.
The socialist states are digging their own grave. In ten years, the capitalistic states will have nice homes, low tax, high standards of living and cheap Uber. The socialists will just try to keep mooching off of whoever is left in their state.
It’s funny. GOPers keep saying that but California, Washington state, etc keep prospering while states like Kansas that go full Right Wing are disasters.
Wow. So now drivers are going to badge into their cars at 8 am and punch out at 5 pm? Didn't realize they wanted the inflexibility of being employees.
Talked to several drivers about this. I have yet to meet one to tell me that they’d want to be treated as employees. Almost all it hem have other jobs that proved them benefits. The biggest benefit of ride sharing for them is the flexible hours.
That makes them contractors
Yikes
