I ended up skipping my phone screen and moving straight to the on-site as part of a mobile hiring event that a recruiter invited me to via LinkedIn, but generally speaking all of these phone screens are the same tool wise. Youโ€™ll be given a link to hacker rank, coder pad, or maybe some internal tool even in the case of Google. All of these tools have IDE like capabilities that the employer can enable / disable as they deem necessary. Either way though, if you move to the on-site, there will be at least 1 white board problem which youโ€™ll have to answer without the help of a code editor. Depending on the role, the phone screen may also include some technical non coding questions specific to your field or computer science in general.

Thanks ubermensch for the details. Itโ€™s surprising that my recruiter told me there wouldnโ€™t be any coding questions to solve during the Phone screen.
