This experience is from 2018. Had an excellent on-site after 3 phone interview. The position was data scientist but ML focused. Had lunch meeting with hiring manager and the team after on-site. Then came the negotiating part. The recruiter was totally a douche bag wrt his attitude while talking to me. Offer was: Base: 190k Cash bonus: ~20k RSU: 350k over 4 years RSU refresher after 1 Yr of employment vested over 3 years: ~100k The RSU of 350k was low I felt, I negotiated hard. The recruiter then decided to take back the offer and even accused me of treating Uber as a “money place” - yes those were his exact words. Now that I have a FANG offer along with others, I don’t regret not getting Uber at the above TC.
And is a recruiter allowed to take back an offer?
Well, I bet your TC @FANG would have been much better with uber on you resume.
But I won’t apply for a job within 1 Yr of getting a job at Uber.
What's your experience and background?
5+ Yr experience in applied ML in the industry + PhD in applied maths.
Now I know why my resume was rejected by Uber 😂
Calling BS. If your offer was revoked, you are conveniently leaving out key details of the story. There is next to nothing you can say during negotiation that will result in pulling the offer.
It happened. You can call BS if you want. Not leaving any key details. I was very professional but firm during the negotiations.
Sounds like you were borderline candidate for them and they didn’t want you bad enough. That explains them low balling you and pulling out after some back and forth. Also possible is that given that uber hires into specific teams, they had another candidate they felt stronger about.
They could certainly have stronger candidates, but then they should have offered the position to them first before offering me. Irrespective of if I was a borderline candidate or they had other candidates, the recruiter has no right to say Uber is a “money place” for me.
Yea sounds unprofessional, though I have seen at least some weird recruiter behavior in almost all companies :)
