Uber sr sw eng offer - what to expect

Tc: 260k total. yoe 10. cleared uber interview. waiting for recruiter call to discuss details. what can i expect?
would i be 5a or 5b?
levels.fyi has wide range wrt compensation. Trying to prep up for negotiation. Any suggestions for me?

      Can i or should i ask for level up and offer more interviews if needed? does that work? or should i take 5a and that way i have a chance to shine and get promoted as opposed to get buried in 5b responsibly?

      i know there is no right or wrong answer but i would love to get some perspective wrt 5a vs 5b in regards to role, responsibilities, pressure, etc

      There is a right or wrong. If you think you deserve 5b and are capable ask for more interviews and get a 5b. 5a is wrong! Pressure on 5b is much higher than 5a. You are supposed to be leading multiple 5a with just your technical prowess (as they don't report to you and you have no special power over them).

      Tech lead is a fuzzy title in Uber. Even L4s call themselves tech leads. But in general scope of 5b is same as staff at G. So you will be expected to drive multiple projects that will have 3 or 4 5as and at times even 5bs on it. If you want to establish yourself you will ideally be saying the right things, providing them guidance, enabling them to execute well and be on top of everything. Sr staff is same level as director and the scope spans entire org of upto 100-300 people.

    Yes Seems 5a. Base should be ~190K stocks around ~ 700K. Annual bonus ~ 30K

      They are on the very high end for L5A. Especially the annual bonus. As far as I know the target is closer to $20k.

    So folks at Executive level is not handling things very well, not sure you Immigration status .... as Engineering layoffs are coming .... so even if you plan to join just come with that mindset .....

    Though I myself believe in Uber, but it’s certainly for long race .... but just be careful with lay-off situation

    Every quarter folks talks about layoffs and you never know who will be next .... as company is not profitable and trying to save money everywhere possible.... so anything can happen just be prepared with that mindset .... good luck in any decision you make 👍

    One lesson I have learned - always join profitable company if they are public

      thanks for all the insights. really appreciate it. i tried to gauge some of this situation around lyoffs but everyone was pretty confident in engineering. everyone tried to sell me the direction and attitude change because of dara.

      one of the main reasons i like uber is it still looks scrappy and there are things to work on and improve where one can make an impact.

      I feel happy i know about blind to get some real diverse perspectives so thanks a lot. :)

      While I see some merit in ImDaraOrTK’s point of view, my opinion is that he/she is a bit paranoid when it comes to the interpretation of Thuans words. For one, you shouldn’t be discussing internal information in public. And for second, my interpretation was that he thinks engineering is bloated and we can be more efficient with the people we have. Maybe we will slow the rate of hiring. Maybe we’ll redistribute people. Maybe we’ll performance manage better. But if you are a good performer, I wouldn’t worry too much.

      @OP: if you like the team and challenges, please join the company. There are very few public companies with the kind of impact you could make at Uber’s scale.

    • ^ Right there’s a bit of paranoia. There are still a ton of eng reqs open. What happened with marketing recently was after a hiring freeze and executive change.

      Personally I’m in it for the long haul. Our stock price is low because we’re doing something that’s never been done before.

    thanks for all the help. how much can i push with a competing offer? Also, is it oky to reveal competing company and all numbers to each other? (i have something in the pipeline that _may_ materialize thus asking).

    also, should i ask for a week to decide? or that’s not up to me?

      Yes, Uber should beat them. Just let ur recruiter know that u are expecting multiple offers so they will the best they can. They will not negotiate after that and only work on a sign on
