Uber vs Google

I have offers from both. Uber is for 5a while Google is 4. Assuming pay is similar after negotiations, which do you guys think is the best choice? These are my pros and cons:
Uber - free promotion, probably higher tc and more upside, more impact in terms of work
Google - better commute and wlb, better food and general perks, bidets, better brand name

Definitely Google. Uber TC is not comparable to G, because it's not real money yet, and considering the market situation it doesn't look like they'll make it.

That's expected, but they gave valid reasons, I'd love to hear the reasons to pick G.

@gywtb : you just based the decision on level. Levels mapping is not as simple as levels.fyi says. I know folks who were senior software engineers from Uber who were interviewed for L5 but given L4. It’s just how G works.

Let’s face it, whichever option OP chooses, he is not going to “suffer”. No one will accept a lower level AND lower TC. G may give you lower level, but not TC is not lowball.

@I.: How does that help your argument? Just because Google does it a lot doesn’t make it an irrelevant factor. All else equal it’s a big deal: difference in scope, impact, growth, etc.

And all else is pretty equal here imo. Actually arguably more TC and upside with Uber.

Also, I bet most of these people from Uber chiming in, never had the opportunity to go to Google (couldn’t pass the interviews).

The interviews are about the same difficulty but continue to support the arrogant Googler stereotype. Uber interview can easily be harder than Google depending on your interviewers...plus it’s not just exclusively a handful of graph questions.

I had offers from both recently and preferred Uber over Google and I know people who received offers from Google but not Uber. I chose another company (not Fitbit - that was last company) in that end for other reasons but it was hard to turn Uber down whereas the Google offer & team didn’t excite me. There are cons of Google and you’d do well to recognize them instead of tying your identity to the prestige of your employer.

tldr; Google is the far better choice

I am an L5 SWE at Google and worked at Uber for 2 years prior. I was promoted from L4 to L5 in just under 2 years. Here are my thoughts:

    1) Level and title cannot be compared 1 for 1 between companies. Google doesn't give a rats ass what level you are at a different company. L5 at Uber, E5 at Facebook, SDE III at Amazon all generally translate to L4 at Google unless you blew the interviewers away with your system design skills.

L4 at Google can easily have a larger scope and make a big impact depending on the project. Don't let title and level guide you, talk to the hiring manager you are aligned with and understand exactly what is going to be expected of you and the growth opportunity. If you don't think you're good enough to get promoted to L5 at Google, then you're probably not.

You're a fool if you think joining Uber at L5 means that you'll get a Google offer at L5 when you come back in a year or 2. It's far easier to join at L4 and get promoted than to get hired externally at L5.

    2) Comp is also a no brainer reason to choose Google. It's REAL money! Uber has been talking about an IPO for 7 years now and the dreams of becoming an IPO millionaire are over. The valuation is already so inflated that the upside isn't really there anymore. You'd be better off joining Google for a few years and leaving for the next up and coming start up that actually has upside. Uber is in for a rude awakening once/if it hits the open market.

Also, Uber's TC at offer stage is gravely over inflated. The recruiter will sell you on an annual bonus (which is weak and even top performers rarely receive anything significant), equity refreshers (again...fake money) when in reality all you will take home for at least the next 2-3 years will be your base salary. The amount of money you will leave on the table in the first couple of years will be depressing.

    3) the food is better

    4) You mentioned commute, I'm assuming you don't live in SF and would be commuting from the South Bay to the city? That's reason enough for me right there to choose Google!!

    5) the food is better

All in all, I have never regretted the decision to leave Uber and join Google. I've saved up enough money and bought a house, paid for a wedding and have REAL savings. None of this would be true had I stayed at Uber

Why is it that every time a Google bro is threatened he says oh you must have not gotten in lol
For the record I recently received offers from Uber Google fb and msft and chose Uber in a heartbeat. Grow up and accept the fact that you do not know everything about every company just because you work at Google. Not everyone chooses Google; it's only the people who can't get in that regard it so highly

WTF is wrong with Google folks, they are full of ego. No wonder people have a perception that Googlers are jerks.

I had offers from G and FB and chose FB, I sensed a lot of ego in Google interviewers.

had the exact same decision post-FB (incl level difference) and chose Uber. no regrets

what were your exact offer breakdowns?

I wouldn’t worry about marginal brand name difference. you’re no longer an L3, you can get interviews anywhere regardless

It's still early so I don't have all numbers yet, expecting both to be able to match the other reasonably well and I think I'll be satisfied in terms of money with either choice at the end.

Its literally the best time to join since 5 years ago. Right before IPO your TC is still given with 60-70B valuation

Uber is on a growth trajectory. Google is underperforming s&p500. Plus a down level? Uber is the clear choice unless you want to rest and vest.

5a vs T4, Google low balled you and you are still waiting for numbers? Choice seem to be obvious. Btw I would also choose Uber even in case if G was giving T5.

Same situation and chose Uber. Big tech had a great couple years, but their stock growth has slowed and they’re showing real signs of a ceiling. Expect equity portion of comp. to be flat through the next 1-2 years while they refind their footing and market shifts. Uber still has headroom for equity portion to grow.
