Uber's a dick to not give any runway time

I mean it sucks for everyone, but more so for hard working employees on H1B. Since they were not given any runway, they have less than 60 days to prep, find a job, get the legal transfer processes done AND start working... or go back to their home countries.

They should have at least kept them on payroll for a month or two to give them more time to find a job.

edit: it is pointed out to me that there is no runway generally during a layoff.

Uber is a business, not a charity. Employees always fall into the trap of thinking their employers actually care about anything other than making a profit from their work.

Amazon generally gives heads up for PIPs, that’s not the same as layoffs. Almost no one gives heads-up for layoffs. My statement is based on working in this industry 10+ years and not just my experience at Amazon.

I was in a Microsoft layoff a ways back. Stayed on payroll for 2 months + 1 month severance. Plus they paid my cobra premium for like 8 months.

That’s an exception, I’ve been laid off 3 times and not once was anyone kept on the payroll. Severance is standard, being kept on the payroll is not.

I’ve never heard of amazon doing this. All layoffs I’ve seen at amazon were telling employees they have 3(?) months to find a new job before getting laid off (preferably internal transfer). Layoffs at amazon aren’t due to financial problems though, it’s just some projects getting scrapped and needing to shuffle those people around.

Companies don’t do this. They’re not going to wait around for you to fuck up their systems or steal their IP knowing you’ll be terminated on date X. Every place I know of does the instant layoff and walkout.

Heard of PIP? I know LinkedIn warns folks in advance too. You should check.

PIP isn’t the same! PIP = you f’d up Layoffs = the company f’d up

I think the heads up may not have to be specific date/time, it can also be how the overall business or team outlook might be in the upcoming months, at least after IPO they should have given some kind of heads up/indicators.

Likely due to California Warn act, you maybe walked out the bldg , but you get 60days notice/ paid employment plus whatever extra severance the company chooses to give you.

      Thanks!

I hope that's true. I'll inform the few I know who were told they have 60 days to find a job by their lawyers starting yesterday.

Severance = 💰. But if they don’t keep the employment the visa crisis is there

Severance is obvious. It takes like 2 weeks at the minimum just to get an H1B transfer receipt only after which a new employer can initiate on boarding. USCIS can take longer and don't have to give a shit. They literally have less than 6 weeks to do everything a job search process needs.

If my understanding is correct, Twitter did the same thing back in 2016. Though I didn't ask for the detail, some of my friends needed to go back to their home countries (of course some of them had a family).
