Unassigned seating at Salesforce

I'm new to Salesforce and I gotta say, everything has impressed me so far EXCEPT the actual office space. I hate it, the floors look like call centers, and they are Gung-Ho about unassigned seating, meaning nobody has a dedicated desk. So you can't personalise your own space, your desk has to be clear when you leave so the cleaning crew can wipe it down overnight.

Do employees there really like this? It feels so dead..

  • So much first world problems among the tech bros? What next? The toilet papers are not scented?

Having your own desk is a first world problem? I sure as hell hope you never run a business.

Lol if you read my post I clearly say that I'm Impressed with the place, except for that. And having a workspace you like is pretty damn important since you're spending at least 40 hrs a week there trying to stay motivated and productive.

Wow that’s an awesome idea. I hate sitting near my teammates so this is a perfect excuse to be far away from them

It's called "ohana seating". Engineering is exempted from it.

Must be new, as I interviewed about 3 months ago, I am an engineer, and I was told that’s how seating would be

If I wanted unassigned seating, I’d go sit at Starbucks.

  • It’s because so many people work from home. It allows them to rent half as much office space and have double the headcount. It’s a huge cost saving method.

The Ohama seating name is great. Give a shitty feeling idea a cool name and pass it off as something good. You spend less on office space so you can afford to pay for more homeless taxes 😂

I interviewed there and declined the offer because I disliked the idea so much. I travel light anyway but at least during cold and flu season, I don’t have that added worry of a shared table top.

Their rationale is actually that having the desks clear and clean "like new" every day helps maintain a healthy environment especially during flu season

Unassigned seating is only for the sales bros. If you’re in tech & prod you keep the same desk.

Some of our areas are moving to this. And no, we don't like it.

No this is in NYC. And I am in Engineering. It's true that Ohana seating seems less enforced for T&P but it's still a thing. For example, even though all the engineers seem to return to the same desk every day NONE of them are personalized because the team in charge of maintaining the office space STRONGLY discourages this because they insist on desks Being cleaned over night and like new the next day.

  • I had one of my old jobs actually put motion sensors on everyone’s chairs to see who actually sat at their desks. This was just prior to opening up “hoteling” desks and putting in lockers.

I'm all too familiar with this - some places call it Choice Seating, some High Performance Workspaces. I agree it creates a sterile work environment, in all senses of the word - no personalization, no character. And even if the group self-calibrates some semblance of assigned seats, there's always that one person that seems to enjoy sitting in other people's seats "because they can".

The utilization argument is bogus too; my last company argued for it because our average *weekly* utilization was 80% - the problem was everyone was in Monday-Thursday but worked from home on Friday, so when they switched there's was almost always somebody without a desk.

No one really likes it. You’re new here. Most of the loudspeaker trumpeting about how much we love everything is top-down propaganda. Luckily I’m in engineering and we are (for now) spared this atrocity.

Walmart is same. One diff is no cleaning guy. In every morning there are cups with rotten milk coffee over the night on the desks. Monday is the worst.

Non-eng people spend a lot of time chatting with immediate colleagues because they have tendency to communicate well, and have a life outside work. So, ohana seating splits them apart so that they can focus on work. Engineers have no life outside work and they don't talk to each other anyway, so no ohana seating for nerds.

Yeah I have an assigned desk but I’m in engineering, if they do allow Obama seating that would be really dumb. Would make finding seating to be near my team pretty tough lol
