While it's not technically illegal, one thing my company loves to do is receive free labor, but masquerade it as a growth opportunity. Here what they'll do is hire you for a certain role and if you show any additional proficiency, let's say in my case fort leadership, they'll have you start working 100% at that capacity while also yelling at you for not putting full focus on your hired roles. So I'm working as a lead on my project (coaching, trainings, client meetings, answering questions, handling escalations because my leadership doesn't have the technical knowledge to do so, helping with process improvement and managing the team and their behavior, etc) all while being paid like a level 1 tech and still being required to perform all of my previous tasks and responsibilities. They also lie to our customers face and tell them that things have been implemented with our team and things are set a certain way while I'm reality it's not at all, if just a very very loose representation of it. They do this at all levels at my company and i personally find it unethical. What sort of things does your company do that you feel is unethical?
With this company only like 7 months
How many years total
Across all my vocations over the years: 10. In IT? 4
It's every company ever, they will want you to perform at a higher level before promoting you.
While i understand this, most companies ask that you perform a few tasks here and there to sorta test the waters, and even then only for a few months. My employer demands 100%performance in my higher role for at least 18 months before extending a promotion. I've got a bit less than a year to go now, if i stick with it at all
Is it worth sticking out for it ?
It's part of working in consulting.
This is pretty common with companies like Cognizant, TCS, HCL and all other off shore consulting companies. As per my experience they have to no work ethics what so ever. There employees stick to corporate culture they bring over from India, which include, abuse, lieing, back stabbing. In most team of 10 people there will be only one technically sound guy and rest will be just lousy engineers or recent graduates with no experience at all. Well, they are cheap labor so I guess we can't complain. I am sure they will also ask you to work during different time zone across the globe. I will strongly recommmend to get out of there and try your luck somewhere else.
+1. So true!
Pro tip that I learned the hard way: don't take a perceived promotion or additional responsibility because if it's not truly a promotion or responsibility that comes with authority. It's all too easy to put ourselves in these shitty positions under the guise that we are "moving on up". If they really need you there, they will put you there. If they don't it might be a hard pill to swallow, but you're better off in the long run.
Recently my manager asked me to take her responsibility and it is like to help me to grow. But in reality it is more work more politics involved and she did not mention promotion or higher pay. I work in Genentech and it seems they don't promote people until they are on the job. It is really tough for me as I felt I am being put into an awkward position with no authority and no right status to lead. Thoughts?
The other thought is I work in Genentech for 7 years and I constantly got head hunters contacting me for jobs. Very tempting . But I worry I will regret once I left Genentech.... but I did not have a single promotion even my reviews said I am a high performer. Maybe it is time to jump?
this is common with all the consulting firms... but telling lies is not the company policy but in your case it’s the individual mgr issue
How many years have you been working?
