What is more important for someone graduating with a masters degree in computer science for getting interview calls from FAANGM companies in the US for SDE related roles? I will be graduating from a poorly known university in the US but I have worked at Microsoft and Amazon in India as SDE(YOE:2). Should I be worried about getting interview calls ?
To get a call, you may not need either. But making it into these companies might be a different story. In all the workplaces I've worked, the folks coming from reputed brand or those graduated from reputed universities are heard and taken seriously. Everyone else has to toil hard. In interviews too, whenever we had a discussion about the candidate, both the points you mentioned were raised and sometime decisions to extend the offer was made based on their past and not how well they performed in interview. Ofcourse if someone bombs all of their interviews then there is no point but those coming from reputed brands get away with sometimes below average interview performance.
Both are equally worthless if you did not graduate from the leetcode university.
Having work experience in competitive roles at FAANG is usually indicative that you did something correct in undergrad. So they aren’t independent, and both do matter.
